Workshop description:
Screencasts are superb tools for teaching library users about your
technology and resources. Best of all, screencasts can be produced quickly
without any specialized equipment. This workshop will show how libraries
are using screencasts to create tutorials and provide hands-on training in
creating screencasts using Camtasia.
According to one definition, "a screencast, or video screen capture, is a
digital recording of a computer screen output, often containing audio
narration." Screencasting for libraries allows you to create online
tutorials for your patrons and fellow staff. There are multiple products
available to develop screencasts, from freeware to more expensive software
with extra features. One of them, Camtasia, even allows the ability to
incorporate video and require user interaction, such as mouseclicks.
Although the technology is relatively new, educators have reported better
student understanding and success after implementing screencasts.
In this hands-on workshop, participants will create a short screencast using
Camtasia. Erin and Alan will cover the basic concepts of screencasting,
demonstrate a completed screencast with advanced features, and finally, help
you to create your own. Come prepared with an idea of a simple online task
that your library users could learn, such as how to search by title or
author, for example. You will leave the session with a short screencast,
which will teach your patrons a skill, whether they are in the library or
using a home computer. Please bring a flash drive to save your project.
