The Obama administration released the Open Government
Directive<http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/assets/memoranda_2010/m10-06.pdf>this
morning – a step toward a more open government. On President Obama’s
first day in office he demonstrated his dedication to an open and
accountable government by tasking the Office of Management and Budget (OMB)
to create this directive and our community has anxiously been awaiting its
arrival. In short the Directive “is intended to direct executive
departments and agencies to take specific actions to implement the
principles of transparency, participation, and collaboration set forth in
the President’s
Memorandum<http://www.whitehouse.gov/the_press_office/TransparencyandOpenGovernment/>
.”
Today’s Directive requires executive departments and agencies to:
1. Publish government information online,
2. Improve the quality of government information,
3. Create and institutionalize a culture of open government, and
4. Create an enabling framework for open government
Each agency will be responsible for creating an open government website to
provide government information to the public. Within 90 days agencies will
receive guidance from OMB pertaining to the Web site and within 120 days
each agency will produce an open government plan.
