*Announcing the **Orbis Cascade Alliance Research Interest Group*

The Research Interest Group has been formed to facilitate communication
and discovery between institutions, providing a forum for discussion and
development of collaborative research on all aspects of library work.

The objectives of this group include: 1) Helping each other learn how to
do better research and 2) Making more efficient use of our collective
resources, thus advancing our individual research interests more
quickly. Pursuing these two major objectives has the additional benefit
of providing the qualitative and quantitative data necessary for
improved assessment and advocacy.

Results from our collaborative research would be open and shared for
others' benefit.

Potential collaborations include (but are not be limited to):

    * Finding examples of cooperative research utilized elsewhere.
    * Comparing existing data between institutions (e.g. web logs).
    * Seeking grant support to fund research activities.
    * Listing people's expertise in various domains and available
      institutional resources.
    * Division of fees among participants to develop high quality
measures (cheaper and higher quality end product than everyone
      creating measures individually).
    * Utilizing the same measure at different institutions (results
      illustrate each institution's uniqueness).
    * Utilizing different measures for the same question. Results
indicate the strengths and weaknesses of different measures.
    * Drawing upon expertise within consortial institutions: information
about conducting research, the study body, or other topics of
interest to the group (e.g. how or when to do an IRB proposal).

Flexible research groups determine areas of interest and conduct
research topics in rotation -- e.g. one year focus on collection
development research, next year on user services and the following year
on the web. Depending on institutional needs we could focus these
studies in different library domains (instruction pre/post test, web
site usability testing, collection development analysis and more).
