In October MedlinePlus<http://www.medlineplus.gov> released a speech enhancement to their interactive, online medical words tutorial. The tutorial helps consumers understand the roots of the medical words, offers quizzes to reinforce comprehension, and more. Take the tutorial yourself at: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/medicalwords.html

In addition to the Medical Words Tutorial MedlinePlus has been offering consumers information via their HealthDay News Updates<http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/newsbydate.html>. Living a Healther Life: the new community health education center at salem hospital

Leading and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is all about having the information needed to make educated health decisions.  This can often be difficult with a myriad of sources out there sometimes providing confusing and misleading information.

Thanks to the more than $4 million donated to the Salem Hospital Foundation by numerous community members, physicians and hospital employees, the new Community Health Education Center (CHEC) opened in October on the Salem Hospital campus in Salem, Oregon and provides the community one source for trusted health information.  The state-of-the-art facility is staffed with trained professionals including health educators, nurses and a librarian all available to help connect patients, families, and community members with the information they need to make informed decisions.

Professionals at the CHEC personally greet each person and help determine their needs whether they be Internet, video and print resources, cooking classes, support groups or other educational opportunities.  The health education center is made up of five areas including The Pierce Resource Center—a community health library, The Gehlar Wellness Kitchen—a state-of-the art cooking classroom, The Gerlinger Support Group Room, The King Staff Library and The Green Education Classrooms.

Whether someone needs help understanding a diagnosis, researching an existing condition, or learning how to eat healthy, the CHEC staff are happy to assist community members, patients, and families find the information and resources they need. It is with mixed feelings that Oregon Health Go Local is saying goodbye to Anne Hepburn, our project assistant. She is leaving to be the newest librarian at the Pacific Northwest College of Art<http://pnca.edu/>. We are happy for her, but sad to see her go. In addition to getting a professional job in this tough economy, Anne also recently earned her Masters in Library Science from Emporia State University’s SLIM Program<http://slim.emporia.edu/>. Anne began working with the Oregon Health Go Local project in November, 2008. Her outside-the-box thinking, attention to detail, sense of humor, and dedication to Oregon Health Go Local will be missed. Please help us congratulating Anne on these major accomplishments.
