[Libs-Or] reinforce shelving, how to?

Our shelving consists of oak bookcases with wood shelves held up by metal brackets. Overcrowded shelves have caused the sides of these cases to bow outward (resulting in collapsing shelves, or near collapsing shelves). We would like to reinforce all of these cases. Has anyone else had to deal with this problem? So far we have reinforced one with a steel rod running the length of the case and bolted at one end. This seems to work, although this is a narrow bookcase- only 5ft wide. Most of the others are 12 ft. (they are all 7ft tall). Any suggestions for methods to reinforce bookcases?
Thank you,
Jane
