The ALN Board of Directors sets overall direction and establishes budgets and policies. The ALN Executive Director works closely with the Board and makes recommendations on plans, programs, and policies. The ALN Executive Director is responsible for managing the operations of the organization and implementing decisions of the Board. The ALN Executive Director prioritizes activities, identifies problems and opportunities, and implements solutions. The ALN Executive Director works in a collaborative problem-solving mode consulting with the directors of the member libraries and with the State Library staff. The successful candidate must be highly motivated, have strong planning and organizational skills, sound fiscal management abilities and be an effective communicator. As the hiring institution, the University of Alaska Anchorage applies for grant funding for the ALN Executive Director position. The ALN Executive Director will hold a term faculty appointment at UAA. The supervisor of record is the Dean of UAA/APU Consortium Library. Currently there is no other staffing employed by ALN.

Salary: Minimum $55,000 annually; health and life insurance, tuition waiver benefits; represented by bargaining unit.

Requirements of the job: Master's degree from an accredited college in library or information science, media services, or closely related field.  Two years minimum of professional library experience at the manager level. Working knowledge of current library technologies.

Preferred Experience: Experience working with library consortia and/or other collaborative projects. Experience working with a policy-making board. Background in financial management of non-profit organizations. Working knowledge of grant administration.

Technology Manager

Salem Public Library is seeking a professional librarian to be the library's Technology Manager. This position will provide leadership in pursuing, implementing, and training staff to use new technologies to improve customer service delivery and increase staff efficiency. The Technology Manager will also direct the services of the Technical Services division, the A-V Center, the Computer Lab, and the Library's Technical Support Analyst. In addition to technology planning, this dynamic role also encompasses network maintenance and upgrades, and troubleshooting electronic library resources such as computer hardware, software, databases, Internet and related equipment. The Technology Manager is an important part of the Library management team and reports to the Library Administrator. The schedule may include occasional evening or weekend hours.

Salary: $4,572-$5,844/month + great benefits.

The Director of Library and Media Services has overall responsibility for the efficient and effective leadership of the private library and media collections, including management of fiscal, human, and technology resources. The position defines and implements the overall philosophy, objectives, internal policies and procedures for library and media collection development, management and services; and ensures protection of and access to a comprehensive collection of print, media and digital resources. It organizes and directs all activities concerned with the administration of the library, including a continual process of short and long range planning. The Director identifies, and implements practical applications of information technology, including data management and curation, integrated library systems, and web and digital multi-media technologies; and works closely with other departments to coordinate these applications.

A Master's degree and 10 plus year's relevant experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience) is required for the position. Knowledge of library and information systems, including an understanding of MARC is required. Successful candidates will have thorough knowledge of the principles, methods and practices of library and digital collections development and management. Personnel management and team building/coordination experience and strong language and communications skills are necessary - specifically candidates need the ability to effectively communicate information, both in written and oral form, to individuals both within and outside the company.

The Head of Instructional Services leads the design, implementation, and assessment of the Portland State Library's instructional services; coordinates the teaching activities of the Library; and integrates information literacy into the curriculum. The Head of Instructional Services develops creative strategies to deliver library instruction; identifies best practices and standards of excellence for teaching; develops a positive and shared vision of library instruction; and provides training and continuing education to library instructors. The Head is responsible for the collection and reporting of data for the instructional program and student learning outcomes assessment. She or he also manages and develops library teaching facilities, including the Library instruction classrooms, participates in providing reference services, and serves as a liaison to one or more departments within the Graduate School of Education. The Head of Instructional Services supervises the Distance Learning Librarian and the University Studies and Education Librarian ( responsible for the coordination of general education). The Head of Instructional Services is professionally active and contributes to developments in the field. Portland State faculty contribute to faculty governance activities within the Library and the University, engage in community and professional service, and pursue an active publication and research agenda. This full-time, 12-month, tenure-track faculty position with the rank of Assistant Professor, reports to the Assistant University Librarian for Public Services. All faculty members must adhere to University and Library policies and procedures, including Portland State University's Professional Standards of Conduct.

Temporary Librarian Pool

The UO Libraries are building a pool of qualified applicants for possible temporary, short-term appointments. Positions would be of a limited duration not to exceed one year or 20 hours/week without a further competitive search. Assignments vary in location and function, depending on need. Duties may include but are not limited to: reference service in the Knight Library or branch libraries delivering instructional sessions, technical processing, collections management, and digital library development projects. Currently, the Libraries are seeking applications to fill a general need in the UO Portland Library and Learning Commons, located in the White Stag building in downtown Portland, in addition to ongoing needs at UO Libraries on the Eugene campus.

Qualifications Required: ALA-accredited MLIS degree or foreign equivalent; professional experience and/or graduate coursework in specific areas of library service relevant to the temporary need (e.g. reference, library instruction, etc.); the successful candidate will support and enhance a diverse learning and working environment.

Application Deadline: Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis and the pool will remain active through December 15, 2010. Screening of applications will take place as positions become available and continue until positions are filled.
