Our next lecture is Wednesday, April 11, in Room 103 from 12:00-1:00 and features Henry Hughes, Associate Professor of English at Western Oregon University. Learn How to Market Your Gale Databases & How to Use Them to Support Library Programming [Gale Logo]In March the State Library and Gale offered two webinar sessions to help Oregon library staff better understand how and why to use periodicals databases. We received much positive feedback about those and are now planning the next two topics. Finding eResources to Support Library Programming will show participants how to locate and share content and searches that can support library celebrations of specific months, like Women's History Month, holidays, and more. Participants will master the Gale bookmarking feature and learn tips for getting these tools to patrons and students. The one-hour trainings will be offered on April 3rd at 11am and again on May 3rd at 3:30pm Pacific. Interwoven will be two sessions about marketing your Gale databases, during which participants will learn how to order free promotional materials, discover outreach letters and press releases, and discuss using social networking and online media to promote libraries' offerings. Join us on either April 18th at 11am or May 8th at 3:30pm Pacific. These webinars are free, there is no need to register, and a PDF with access information is available on Northwest Central and under Training on the public/tribal and academic Gale support sites for Oregon users. Register Now for Environmental Management program in Portland, OR! Message-ID: <0EBF8018C232B34681C837CF3DC83448FE6114@fs2.CCAHA2.local> ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT: STEWARDSHIP & SUSTAINABILITY Presented by the Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts Portland, OR - May 22, 2012 Cosponsored and hosted by Portland Art Museum ABOUT THE PROGRAM Creating stable environmental conditions is the most significant step an institution can take for the long-term preservation of the collections materials under its stewardship. While most preservation actions affect single items or groups of items, environmental conditions affect entire collections. Though providing stable environmental conditions is a goal for most archives, museums, and libraries, in actuality it can be very difficult to achieve ideal specifications. In addition to economic limitations faced by many institutions, collections are often housed in historic structures, in buildings with aging systems, or in structures whose designs make environmental management difficult. This one day program will explore new approaches to controlling environmental conditions in cultural institutions. Leading experts in the field will present physically and financially feasible environmental control strategies to help institutions preserve collections materials for the long-term. Topics covered will include: * The Collections Environment * Understanding the Building/Climate Relationship * New Approaches and Best Practices for Environmental Control * Environmental Monitoring and Data Analysis This program is intended for staff of cultural heritage organizations responsible for monitoring and managing environmental conditions for collections, including registrars, facilities managers, archivists, librarians, curators, collections managers, and stewards of historic house museums. I know many libraries in Oregon are working to better serve patrons on the Autism spectrum so I thought you may appreciate her email too. She provides good, condensed information about Autism spectral disorders and links to useful resources if you want to learn more. The United States along with many countries recognize April as Autism Awareness Month. Autism spectral disorders (ASD) are a group of developmental disabilities characterized by impairments in social interaction and communication and by restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior (Center for Disease Control [CDC]). ASD is a lifelong disability that manifests itself during the first three years of life. There has been a 78% increase in Autism over the past 5 years with 1 in 88 children affected according to the latest CDC report. While causes are not completely mapped there is current research indicating that genetics and environment play important roles. As previously stated, individuals with Autism exhibit common issues with communication and social behavior. Many individuals exhibit restricted, repetitive and stereotyped behavior patterns. Early intervention and therapy with children is important to develop social and coping skills. Special Education classes help teach such skills and assist in integrating some children into the regular classroom. High functioning adults with autism are often able to find jobs that fit their skills, interest, and needs. In the right environment and at times with additional support, many have the ability to become highly productive members of a workplace community. While there is a growing body of research and knowledge on helping children w/ ASD, there are also a growing number of organizations with a focus on assisting adults in locating work that fits them and integrating them into their communities. After reviewing quite a bit of literature on ASD it appears that applying the basic values of tolerance, respect, and understanding go a long way in building trust ? an initial step in creating a safe and stable environment where individuals with these special needs can flourish. The benefit of course is that when we lend support and enable others it helps them to more effectively apply their skill sets and talents and creates a richer, more joyous and productive workplace for everyone. An individual with autism may display some or all of the following characteristics, which may represent challenges from a certain perspective, or strengths from another: * Difficulty understanding language, gestures, and/or social cues * Literal or excessive speech, often with a concentration on a particular topic * Difficulty relating or participating in a back-and-forth conversation or interaction * Social awkwardness * Intense or odd interests * Repetitive behaviors such as pacing or hand flapping or rocking * More or less sensitivity to light, sound, smell, taste or touch than usual * Anxiety, abnormal fears and/or lack of appropriate fear of real dangers * Difficulty managing transitions, changes in routine, stress, frustration * Strong visual skills * Good rote and long term memory (facts, statistics, etc.) * Adherence to rules, honesty * Intense concentration or focus, especially on a preferred activity Understanding and retention of concrete concepts, patterns and rules * Musical, mathematical, technological and/or artistic ability or interest (source: Advancing Futures for Adults with Autism) Below are a few resources and stories for those with an interest in learning more about ASD. Seminar This Friday Message-ID: The OSU Libraries Faculty Association Seminar Series is pleased to have Chris Marshall, Curator of the Oregon State Anthropod Collection, speak with us on April 13. When: Friday, April 13, 10:00-11:30 Where: Willamette Industries Seminar Rooms, Valley Library, Oregon State University, Corvallis Campus Title: A bookworm by any other name is... recent challenges with bringing the largest insect collection in the Pacific Northwest online We all know what a bookworm is... at least I'm assuming we do. It's the beetle Anobium punctatum described by the entomologist Charles DeGeer in 1774. During this talk, I'll present an introduction to the Oregon State Arthropod Collection, a natural history research collection that has been on campus since the later half of the 1800's and our efforts to bring this invaluable resource into the 21rst century. Key in this effort is the goal to create an online resource that not only accesses the collection's data, but is an integral part of the museum's management. I imagine that our efforts will remind individuals working in the library sciences of the seemingly impossible tasks faced by libraries in the 1980's as they moved from classical print records to computerized solutions - and there are many similarities. Among the greatest challenges we face currently is the means by which our data, and metadata, will be shared with an ever growing body of online databases which - surprisingly - are not as well equipped to deal with the very real problem, namely: is Anobium punctatum by any other name really Anobium punctatum? More information about the Oregon State Anthropod Collection: http://osac.science.oregonstate.edu/ The presentation will take place on Friday, April 13, from 10:00-11:30, in the Willamette Industries Seminar Rooms on the third floor of the Valley Library (VL 3622). The OSU Libraries Faculty Seminar Series is free and open to all. Refreshments will be served. Message-ID: Hi gang, I apologize for any cross-posting.... CSD is in need of a few good people! Sadly, our previous presenters & facilitators are not able develop OLA Children's Services Division's Mock Caldecott Award Workshop this year. Because the CSD Executive Board feels that the Mock Caldecott is such a wonderful experience for our youth services library staff across the State, we have decided to embark on a new way of doing things. We are happy to announce the Mock Caldecott Committee, a new volunteer opportunity for able-bodied CSD members!! The Mock Caldecott Committee will consist in approximately 3-5 members. The primary duties will include: 1) Selecting 10 outstanding children's picture books that meet the Caldecott Criteria for inclusion on the 2013 Mock Caldecott discussion list 2) Working with the CSD Executive Board to identify and confirm 1-2 presenters for the 2013 Mock Caldecott Workshop The date and location for the 2013 Mock Caldecott Workshop has been scheduled: January 5th from 9:30 am - 4:30 pm at the Tigard Public Library. If you are an active CSD member and would like to volunteer to be on the Mock Caldecott Committee, simply send an email to Rick Samuelson (ricks at wccls.org) with the following details: a. Describe your past experience in selecting and evaluating picture books b. Describe your past experience in art education, art history or art criticism There's no need to sweat the questions. We're just looking for a little information so we can put together a super-fantastic committee! All committee work will be done electronically, although we hope committee members will be free to attend the workshop on January 5th. The bulk of the workload will occur in early autumn. We expect to have the discussion list and presenters finalized by the early part of November. During the meantime, we will share titles and begin to have email discussions about possible Mock Caldecott titles. If you love evaluating the art in children's picture books, this is the committee for you! If this sounds like fun to you or you want a little more information, please drop me a line. We hope to have the CSD Mock Caldecott Committee finalized by May 1st. Thank you and best wishes! Interested persons may apply to either the face-to-face or DE cohorts. Project ALFA Fellows receive full tuition, travel assistance, and a laptop computer with applications needed to complete ALFA coursework, including an Experiential Learning Lab. We are seeking a diverse population of students who are interested in issues related to universal access to information for persons with physiological challenges. Project ALFA seeks to prepare library and information center professionals who will lead the way in spreading a universal access philosophy as the population of information seekers with physiological challenges is increasing rapidly due to the graying of America among other factors. Project ALFA fellows will be prepared to serve an aging population of information seekers, connecting them to information through various technologies in all types of library and information agencies. Project ALFA Fellows will also disseminate and diffuse the ALFA philosophy in the organizations where they will work through daily work flow as well as through more formal channels such as in-service and continuing education with colleagues in the field, at professional conferences, and special projects. Fellows will learn to incorporate a universal access philosophy into most areas of library and information service, including the use of assistive technologies and other information and communication technologies (ICTs). Before being able to access any of the templates on any version of Citation Maker, users are prompted to enter a number between 0 and 9. A visual cue is provided in that the normally yellow source column on the right is initially grey but turns yellow again once the user enters a number between 0 and 9. Entering the CAPTCHA one time gives the user access to all of the templates until the browser session is closed. I tested the feature in multiple browsers and had no problems. [IMLS logo] IMLS Press Contacts 202-653-4632 Kevin O'Connell, koconnell at imls.gov Mamie Bittner, mbittner at imls.gov New Multimedia Tools Help Museums, Libraries Support 21st Century Skills Washington, DC-The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has revamped the web page for its Museums, Libraries, and 21st Century Skills initiative. Museums and libraries visiting the page will now be able to access practitioner videos, a PowerPoint presentation, an updated resource list, and a toolkit that will help them organize 21st century skills workshops in their communities. These new resources join IMLS's 2009 report and self assessment tool already in wide use. The 21st Century Skills initiative is intended to assist museums and libraries as they leverage their resources to help individuals of all ages acquire such critical skills as critical thinking and problem solving, creativity and innovation, communication, and collaboration. Combining strengths in traditional and digital learning, libraries and museums are well positioned to build the skills Americans need today. "Increasingly, policymakers and researchers are recognizing that we must create and coordinate a learning ecosystem of lifelong and 'life-wide' opportunities for formal and informal learning," said IMLS Director Susan Hildreth. "Not only can libraries and museums respond to increasing demand for learning services, they can facilitate active, engaged learning that gives people the ability to access and interpret knowledge and information throughout their lives. The tools we're providing with this new web page will help libraries and museums in this effort." The Making the Learning Connection Community Workshop Toolkit is based on a series of community workshops conducted by IMLS between June 2010 and May 2011. This toolkit is designed to assist museum and library leaders in planning and executing 21st century skills workshops in their own communities. It outlines the planning process, provides timelines, sample exercises and agendas, and brief descriptions of the 2010-11 IMLS workshops. Museum and library staff can also use a new 21st Century Skills PowerPoint and an extended bibliography in their presentations and planning. About the Institute of Museum and Library Services The Institute of Museum and Library Services is the primary source of federal support for the nation's 123,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. Through grant making, policy development, and research, we help communities and individuals thrive through broad public access to knowledge, cultural heritage, and lifelong learning. Today, April 16th, L-net turns 9 years old. L-net lets anyone who lives, works or goes to school in Oregon ask questions by live chat, text messaging or email, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Just last Tuesday, April 10th at 5:51pm, a student at Central Oregon Community College asked the 200,000th question on our statewide reference service: "Hello, I need some help narrowing a broad topic to a defined research question. my broad topic is 'DNA Fingerprinting' " In this question, the librarian expertly interviewed the patron and got her ready to start searching for resources for her paper: So much has changed in 9 years! When we started, we were a handful of libraries offering chat service a few hours a week. We are now open 24/7 through the help of 40 Oregon libraries. Our 200,000th question was answered by Sam, one of our volunteers who give their personal time, a few hours a week, to helping Oregonians get access to authoritative information through libraries. So much has stayed the same! We are returning to our original name, Answerland, this fall. We are still supported financially by the Oregon State Library and by the hard work and goodwill of innumerable staff at Oregon libraries, who contribute to answering questions, to our advisory board, event planning and other teams, and by referring patrons our way. And yes, patrons still need help when they are working online, and library workers are still some of the best people to serve them. This year for the first time, Literary Arts is making the template for their Oregon Book Awards finalists' bookmarks available to all libraries to download and print. To print these bookmarks: 1. Go to http://www.oregon.gov/OSL/LD/aboutcenter.shtml 2. Scroll down to '5. Oregon Book Awards' a. There you will see four links that will take you to .PDF documents that are the templates to the bookmarks. Each template is a single-sided document. There are 3 different genre specific templates you can choose from for the front side of the bookmarks and there is 1 template that should be printed as the back side of all 3 front sides. This second-side template has general information about the Oregon Book Awards. 3. Click on each bookmark link to open that template and print! Here are some other ideas for promoting the Oregon Book Awards: * Purchase or request donations of the Oregon Book Awards finalists' books to be added to your circulating collection. * Link from your website to the Literary Arts website to announce the Oregon Book Awards finalists (http://www.literary-arts.org/oba-home/book-awards/current-finalists/). * Conduct a Mock Oregon Book Awards workshop. * Host an Oregon Book Awards book club. * Contract with one of the authors to present a lecture or event. We have done our best to keep our library standards up to date but changes in technology make it difficult to nail down standards for staffing, space, collection development, etc. Our research has shown that standards are used in various and inconsistent ways throughout the country and the PLD Board thinks it's time to get a grip on WHY we even have standards. Chicago: ALA, 2012. 025.11 Maxwe ISBN 978-0-8389-1159-4 Because libraries are information and research centers, they can support a huge variety of grant funding initiatives outside their own purview. Cultural centers, businesses, and educational institutions are untapped resources for library funds. What's more, many libraries may find that collaborating on a grant application with another organization is preferable to going forward with a time-consuming application of their own. But finding the right collaborative partner and securing a place at its development table can be challenging. Drawing on her extensive experience as a grant developer and library director, in this ALA Editions Special Report Maxwell * Presents an overview of grant basics, with extensive lists of both online and print resources * Suggests how to frame libraries research capabilities as benefits to the community at large, transforming these capabilities into a revenue source * Explores strategies for locating potential partners, with tips on approaching collaborators and establishing successful relationships * Describes what libraries can ask for from the grant developer, making sure to include what they want in the grant proposal Maxwell offers an abundance of practical advice and encouragement for using this novel approach to secure additional funding for libraries. Chicago: ALA, 2012. 027.473 Gunne ISBN 978-0838911389 The joint-use college/public library can be an ideal solution to serving patrons while managing overextended resources, and this illuminating book scrutinizes successes and failures of the joint-use model. Three founding faculty librarians of a joint-use college/public library discuss the factors that should go into evaluating when and where a joint library is suitable. Incorporating lessons learned from five case studies, the authors * Include a short history of joint libraries, exploring how this model is a natural evolution from reciprocal borrowing, shared catalogs, and interlibrary loan * Explain how to manage all aspects of a joint-use library, including choices about the physical plant, decisions on contractual requirements, collection development, classification systems, cataloging and technical services issues, personnel, and more * Address emerging trends and best practices for serving students and the general public simultaneously * Offer interviews with administrators and staff in successful joint-use libraries Anyone interested in joint-use libraries in particular, or radical ideas for extending resources in general, will want the information in this book. (free talk on the importance of reading aloud) Message-ID: Hi gang, Oh, the magic hat, the magic hat! It moved like this, it moved like that! It spun through the air ........ Once in a great while a magic hat falls onto our heads... such is the case with my current announcement: Mem Fox is coming to town to speak at the Innovative Northwest Teacher's Authors Series (http://tint-edu.com/TINT/Author_Classes.html). Apparently, T.I.N.T. had scheduled Mem for another presentation earlier in the day and the presentation fell through (something about Mem needing to reschedule from a previous date). So..... Mem Fox has offered to provide a quick 40 minute talk for local library staff on the importance of reading aloud!! Youth library staff are welcome to join us for what promises to be an enlightening visit from one of the great literacy-minded children's authors of all time. MEM FOX on THE IMPORTANCE OF READING ALOUD Beaverton City Library Tuesday May 8th from 2 - 2:45 pm If you or your library staff are in or around the Portland metro area, this would be a great (and FREE) opportunity. This will be a barnstorm visit. Sadly, there will not be time for autographs or a meet-and-greet after the talk. Still... it should be loads of fun. Please let me know if you have any questions. I hope to see lots of you in a couple of weeks. Message-ID: <0EBF8018C232B34681C837CF3DC83448FE65E3@fs2.CCAHA2.local> Registration Deadline is Monday, May 7th! ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT: STEWARDSHIP & SUSTAINABILITY Presented by the Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts Portland, OR - May 22, 2012 Cosponsored and hosted by Portland Art Museum ABOUT THE PROGRAM Creating stable environmental conditions is the most significant step an institution can take for the long-term preservation of the collections materials under its stewardship. Petition your elected representatives with the ALA Legislative Action Center . The major problems remain: - CISPA would permit private "entities" (ISPS, utilities, etc.) to share huge amounts of information about our electronic communications with the government without a legal review or warrant; - CISPA permits these private providers to provide dumps of information without necessarily anonymizing or aggregating the information to protect personal privacy; - CISPA would authorize the National Security Agency (NSA) - an intelligence and military agency - to receive all of the Internet records to be used, not just for cybersecurity, but for other "lawful purposes" as well; - CISPA trumps all other privacy laws - state, local and national - if the sharing of the information is deemed "cybersecurity." The House of Representatives is still scheduled to address a number of troubling cyber bills during Cybersecurity Week, the week of April 23. One of the most troubling bills remains H.R. 3523, *The Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act of 2011,* CISPA . At this writing, the text of CISPA is still in flux and behind-the-scene discussions continue. Additional amendments must be filed next Tuesday, April 24, 2012. While things are in great flux, it could be that H.R. 3523 will hit the House floor next Wednesday or Thursday, April 25-26, 2012. This is the key time to keep your calls going into House offices. Other privacy advocates such as the American Civil Liberties Union, the Center for Democracy and Technology, Free Press, the Electronic Frontier Foundationand the Constitution Projectalso remain in opposition to H.R. 3523. As the ACLU noted in their blog: "The changes are so underwhelming that even the Obama Administration issued a statement [April 18]that their privacy concerns persist." The mix of bills in the House emphasizes sharing vast amounts of electronic communications between private service providers (and other "utilities") and the government. These bills would give immunity and permission to share the traffic on their systems if the information is deemed for "cybersecurity" purposes. *Tell Congress: No Cyber Spying! No CISPA! * - Use the ALA's advocacy site - Use ACLU's - Join the fight on twitter The one improvement we can report is that the specific term "intellectual property" was removed, although there is still too much ambiguity elsewhere in the bill to know for certain that copyright issues couldn't be swept in with all of the other information sharing activities and purposes http://www.districtdispatch.org/2012/04/cybersecurity-bill-votes-start-in-three-days-keep-the-pressure-on/ -- *Diedre Conkling** Lincoln County Library District P.O. I've created a Google doc spreadsheet with our titles and allowed editing for those with a link. Feel free to share this document around and anyone who might be interested in taking or offering books of their own can add or claim books. This is meant to be a very low tech way to share this information (I know there are more robust tools, but sometimes a spreadsheet is really all you need!). As these books are doing no good on our shelves, we're happy to pay the shipping to anyone who needs them. Here be the link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ap2TSlhra6fbdHB4dU40VDh4X1J rd013cXl4RW94c0E If this takes off, could be a great way for us to share around our overstock, if not, it's just one more document in the cloud. OASL Members had voted in favor of the merger at their conference in October 2011. The mission of OASL is to provide progressive leadership to ensure that Oregon students and educators are effective users of ideas and information, and to pursue excellence in school library media programs. OASL and its members touch every corner of the state through the annual Oregon Battle of the Books, ORCA and Beverly Cleary Children's Choice Awards, conferences and other projects. The discussion and vote have been a multi-year process. Sincere thanks to everyone involved, especially OASL President Susan Stone, OASL Past President Ruth Murray, OLA Past President Mary Ginnane, and the members of the OLA-OASL Joint Committee on School-Public Library Cooperation. The two groups will merge effective July 1, 2012. Please join me in welcoming School Librarians, Teacher-Librarians, and School Media Specialists to OLA! -Abigail Elder, OLA President P Please consider the environment before printing this email.
