The Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Library in Portland
seeks a Digital Collections and Metadata Librarian to oversee our
Digital Resources Library (DRL) and metadata for all library
collections.  OHSU is the state's only comprehensive public academic
health center and is made up of the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and

The OHSU Library seeks a Digital Collections and Metadata Librarian
who will bring energy, creativity, and an expansive vision to lead the
effort to optimize metadata output and design new ways to expose the
Library's collections. The qualified candidate will be responsible for
overseeing the creation and strategic application of metadata across a
wide range of materials, both digital and physical collections,
coordinating and supervising metadata creation by staff, student
employees, and interns.  The individual will supervise 1.5 FTE of
classified staff. He or she will work closely with the Head of
Historical Collections & Archives to coordinate metadata projects for
special collections materials in all formats.  As part of the
management of the DRL, the Digital Collections and Metadata
Librarian’s responsibilities may also include: designing and building
digital collections; planning for collection growth and strategic
change; leading the development of policies, procedures, and
documentation; working with faculty and other partners to deposit
material.  The individual will be expected to monitor national and
international trends in metadata, cataloging, and discovery; foster a
culture of productivity and user-centered practices; and organize
training to ensure that members of the department are current in their
metadata skills.  Additional responsibilities include representing the
OHSU Library in a local consortium of health sciences libraries and in
the Orbis Cascade Alliance.

As a member of the Library Faculty, the Digital Collections and
Metadata Librarian participates in planning, policy formation and
decision-making relating to health sciences services, collections and
technologies.  This position requires scholarship and service that
contributes to the effectiveness of the Library, the University, and
the profession.

A graduate degree from an ALA-accredited library and information
science program is required. Three years experience in a health
sciences or academic library is preferred. The ideal candidate will
have experience with digital collections creation and management
tools, and institutional repository software such as CONTENTdm and
Fedora; awareness of current issues and trends in metadata and digital
library development; experience working with campus faculty and staff
on digital projects; familiarity selecting and applying controlled
vocabularies and ontologies; knowledge of best practices for managing
and preserving digital collections. Qualified applicants must
demonstrate an understanding of established and emerging metadata
schemes (Dublin Core, MODS, MARC, EAD), content standards (AACR2,
RDA), and thesauri (LCSH, MESH); working knowledge of classification
standards (NLM, LC), FRBR concepts, and authority records; experience
with one or more metadata manipulation and scripting languages (e.g.
XSLT, Java, Perl, Python, or PHP); and, knowledge of XML, OAI-PMH
and/or OAI-ORE. Model candidates will have experience with project
management techniques and tools, demonstrable experience as a trainer,
and the ability to work independently and in team environments.
Excellent communication and analytical skills are required.
Demonstrated familiarity with the basic principles and standards for
descriptive cataloging of rare printed materials, archival and
manuscript material, and visual material is preferred.

Rank and Salary: This is a non-tenured, twelve-month faculty position
at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor.  The Digital
Collections and Metadata Librarian reports to Emily McElroy, Head of
Content Management and Systems.  Salary and benefits are competitive
and commensurate with qualifications and experience, minimum $50,000.
