Library employees are crucial to our economy and culture. They help small business owners formulate plans; graduates find funding; children fall in love with reading; grandparents connect with grandchildren; corporations save money and improve products; seniors get comfortable with the latest technology; and students get into gaming. Yet these public servants are rarely recognized publicly. National Library Workers Day is a way to do so.

Since 2003, National Library Workers Day (NLWD) has been celebrated on the Tuesday of National Library Week. The day recognizes the contributions of all library workers, including librarians, support staff and others who make library services possible. This year National Library Workers Day is April 10.

The American Library Association-Allied Professional Association (ALA-APA) encourages those who will celebrate the day to nominate "star" library employees for public recognition<http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/SubmitAStarforNLWD>. ALA-APA will post the nominations on its NLWD website.

Anyone may nominate a "Star" library worker or team for creativity, enthusiasm, customer service or that special something they add to a library. Stars can be anyone - students, workers, supervisors or even yourself. Submit nominations through the NLWD  website<http://ala-apa.org/nlwd/?page_id=209%20/>. New nominations will be showcased in the Galaxy of Stars on the NLWD website each week.

There are many ways to celebrate. In addition to nominating Stars, NLWD celebrants can advocate for increased funding and staffing in libraries; invite the public to see who makes it possible for that favorite DVD or book to be available; deliver book-shaped cookies to branches; send thank you notes to their favorite workers; or purchase t-shirts, bags or stickers from the newly expanded NLWD store<http://www.cafepress.com/ALA_APA>  (many gift items are less than $10).
