[Libs-Or] reference question: what is the title of this book?

Advance apologies if this is the wrong venue for this inquiry.  
 
I thought there would be a better chance at identifying a book title on a multi-member board as opposed to torturing a single person from answerland.
 
(BTW: I've spent more time on this question than i should have.)
 
Patron is looking for the title of a book.  The central figure is a snake-lover in his mid-20s.  He gets bit by a venomous snake and dies.  Maybe he was bitten in a quarry.  The story was authored by his mother.
 
That's all we have.  Help.
 
Our patron would be delighted if anyone could identify the title and author of this book.
