First Tuesdays: Easy Readers Aren't so Easy
December 3, 2013, 9:00-10:00am PT
Easy Reader books can be confusing. How can you tell if a reader is for children just starting to read, for someone whose reading level is at the beginning of second grade, or someone who reads somewhere in between? Spokane County Library Youth Services Librarians Gwendolyn Hayley and Mary Ellen Braks will help solve these issues. Presented by Mary Ellen Braks & Gwendolyn Haley, Spokane County Library District
LibraryNow for Libraries
December 10, 2013, 9:00-10:00am or 2:00-3:00pm PT
Close to 95% of all public libraries in Washington State will have an app for mobile phones by the end of 2013 which will enable patrons to connect to all their libraries resources which are available through the web. If you attend this presentation, you will learn what features LibraryNow, the state wide mobile app, has and what the benefits are to the patrons who download it.
40 Great Apps for Mobile Reference & Outreach
December 18, 2013, 9:00-10:00am PT
The proliferation of mobile apps has changed the ways how we search for and access information. Increasingly, the mobile platforms have become the preferred method of accessing information on-the-go. Librarians and information professionals can harness the potentials of these apps to provide innovative services, mobile content, and outreach. The speakers will discuss 40 apps in the categories of books and reference, business, health & fitness and government information, as well as to explore new ideas on how to integrate these apps into a mobile strategy for mobile reference and outreach. Presented by Richard Le, San Francisco Public Library and Mel Gooch, San Francisco Public Library.
First Tuesdays: Edge Strengthens Libraries
January 7, 2014, 9:00-10:00am PT
Edge is a new management and leadership tool that is helping libraries and local governments work together to achieve community goals. With this professional tool, libraries can be better positioned to address community issues - like creating a stronger economy, ensuring workforce development and leading lifelong learning. Through an easy to use suite of tools, Edge supports libraries in making strategic decisions and identifying areas for improvement. The Edge Toolkit gives libraries a look into their local data, from operations to partnerships and programming, to assess how their community is using the technology and how best practices can be put into place to align future growth and services with community priorities. It also provides useful resources to package and showcase the data to other community leaders. Presented by Samantha Becker, University of Washington.
Digital U: Health and Wellness Resources
January 22, 2014, 9:00-10:00am PT
Presented by staff from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Pacific Northwest Region University of Washington Health Sciences Library. Designed as a continuing-education opportunity for staff of libraries in Washington State, this free web presentation introduces library staff to a variety of topics related to digital literacy. Emphasis is on helping library staff better serve patrons in this digital age. The special-subject presentations, lasting about 60 minutes, are recorded so that others may listen at their own convenience.
Adults Just Wanna Have Fun: Adults Programming Beyond Lectures
January 20, 2014, 9:00-10:00am PT
Many public libraries promote themselves as centers of lifelong learning, but fail to engage adults 20-55. Both notoriously underserved "emerging adults" in their 20s and 30s and middle-aged adults who find that there are more learning opportunities for their children than for themselves need creative, social hands-on programs to attract them back to the library. Learn how to remind your adult patrons--and yourself!--that lifelong learning really is fun and fulfilling during this online session. Presented by Audrey Barbakoff, Kitsap Regional Library.
