Maureen,
We've been looking into the possibilities for a makerspace here at the OSU Valley Library, and have found there are few libraries with these set up yet. I don't know of any library in Oregon that has one up and running, but OMSI + Multnomah County PL are setting one up together (http://www.youmedia.org/locations/learning-labs/portland-or-oregon-museum-science-and-industry-omsi). I know Eugene and Portland both have thriving makerspace communities (http://www.adxportland.com/; http://www.eugenemakerspace.com/) although they aren't set up in libraries.
Maybe someone in these places can help. Best of luck with the program!

3d printing is well on the way to constructing full size buildings. Would be a nice thing to point out to kids who come to a MakerSpace group.
Search on "3d printing buildings" or "construction" or similar to find lots of material, including videos of the process, and pictures of prototypes. E.g. http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9242482/3D_printing_techniques_will_be_used_to_construct_buildings_here_and_in_outer_space_

We're setting one up at LO. Todd Feinman will be driving the project.

Hi all:
As they say, watch what you wish for or you just might get it! In my case, I submitted a proposal on behalf of PLD for a annual conference session on maker spaces (see description below). With a nameless person's assurance that that we could backfill a speaker if the proposal was accepted, I gamely marched forward without a speaker(s) in place. It was a heck of a lot easier to leave that detail until the future. Well, the future is upon me, the proposal was accepted, and I write to you, dear reader, for you help in locating said mysterious speaker(s). Help me!
I am looking for someone or two who has real world experience setting up and implementing a maker space in a library. Do we have such a situation in Oregon? That is what I am not sure of.
Any lead you can give me, I will be happy to track down. I have until November 15 to locate an enlightened soul or two and convince them to do my bidding.
In all seriousness, thank you for any help you can provide!
Thanks, Mo
Description of session: Everyone is talking about maker spaces but what makes a successful maker space? How do libraries know what tools and materials to purchase? What are the problems libraries have encountered? Hear from libraries who have implemented maker spaces and learn about what works, what doesn't work, and how to avoid expensive and time consuming pitfalls in the new and exciting area of maker spaces.
