If you want to get an idea of the scope of the world's knowledge about elevators, get a copy of the book Elevator Abstracts, Including Escalators.  178 pages of one-paragraph summaries of studies on elevators (and escalators.)  Oregon State has a copy.

I discovered it when doing some research inspired by Colson Whitehead's novel, The Intuitionist.
