Dear colleagues,
Please mark your calendars for the next Resident Scholar Program Lecture at Oregon State University's Valley Library.
Mary Mitchell is a doctoral candidate in the history and sociology of science at the University of Pennsylvania. She will present her talk “Civil Rights & Civil Liberties in an Atomic Age: A View from the Fallout Suits and Bomb Test Cases,” on Tuesday, August 26th at 2:00 PM in Willamette East room of the Valley Library (room #3622). Here is an abstract of her presentation:
In 1958 and again in 1962 antinuclear activists filed lawsuits seeking to stop atmospheric nuclear testing in the United States and abroad. This lecture places the appeal to law within the broader contexts of government attacks on scientists' academic freedom and activists' developing ideas about the promise of individual rights. In it, I explore the purpose and significance of attempts to air scientific disputes over fallout in the courts.
Mary Mitchell is the third of our Resident Scholars to examine the Linus Pauling Papers with an interest in the Fallout Suits, which Pauling helped to lead. Mitchell’s approach is unique, however, in that her background is in law – she has a J.D. from Drexel University, 2009 – and she is examining what she calls the “broader socio-legal milieu” that informed and surrounded this particular piece of Pauling’s activism. This should be a fun talk – please join us if you can!
The OSU Libraries and Press Resident Scholar Program awards stipends of up to $2,500 per month to support researchers whose proposals detail a compelling potential use of the collections held in the Libraries' Special Collections & Archives Research Center.
