[Libs-Or] Josephine Community Libraries' Database Workshops

Jennifer Maurer jennifer.maurer at state.or.us
Thu Aug 28 12:47:52 PDT 2014

Hi,

A colleague forwarded the most recent Josephine Community Libraries newsletter to staff in Library Support and Development. I was impressed with the two database workshops that Kate Dwyer is conducting. And, I love the names: Student Success Workshop and DataBASE CAMP. :-) See the newsletter below for details.

I contacted Kate and learned that she coordinated with staff in local school districts who approved giving professional development credits to teachers who participate in the workshops. She is now checking if other organizations, like Worksource Oregon and DHS, would offer credits to their staff, too.

If you have questions about the workshops or credits, you are welcome to contact Kate at kdwyer at JosephineLibrary.org<mailto:kdwyer at JosephineLibrary.org> or 541-476-0571.

FYI,
Jen

Free student success workshop this Wednesday

Just in time for back-to-school preparations is the free Student Success Workshop, taking place 5-7 pm this Wednesday, August 27 at the Grants Pass branch of Josephine Community Libraries.

Books are just the beginning of the learning tools available at public libraries. Learning in the digital age requires the knowledge of where to find quality information sources online and how to use them effectively. Public libraries and schools offer in-depth resources, but many people are unaware of them.

Outreach Education Librarian Kate Dwyer will give a lively and informative "guided tour" to safe, free, fact-checked databases provided by schools, libraries, and government agencies. She'll demonstrate how best to use them for education as well as for lifelong learning.

The Student Success Workshop is free and open to the public. Educators, students over 10 years of age, and their parents are strongly encouraged to attend, and to bring their laptop or tablet if available. Participants will learn the skills to evaluate and utilize modern information resources to support learning.

DataBASE CAMP on September 9

Can't make it to the Student Success Workshop? Come to the free DataBASE CAMP, 5-7 pm on Tuesday, September 9, also at the Grants Pass library. Designed for parents, educators, and students over 10 years, this workshop demonstrates how you can use library databases to succeed in school.

No registration is necessary for either workshop. Just show up and be prepared to be amazed. For more information, contact Kate Dwyer<mailto:kdwyer at josephinelibrary.org>, 541-476-0571.

Williams end-of-summer party Wednesday 8/27

Come celebrate a busy summer library season 5:30-8 pm on Wednesday, August 27, at the Williams branch of Josephine Community Libraries.

Local musician Warren Wolfe will coordinate the music, and festivities will also include activities for the kids, educational talks, and refreshments.

The Williams Friends of the Library will offer books for sale, with all proceeds benefitting the Williams branch.

Also remember to bring your preschoolers and toddlers to storytime at the Williams library, every Tuesday at 1:30 pm. Weather permitting, storytimes are held outside in the garden.

For more information, contact JCLI Williams Branch Manager Danielle Schreck<mailto:dschreck at JosephineLibrary.org>, 541-846-7020.

Volunteers needed for library district campaign

Hundreds of volunteers are now needed to help ensure stable funding for our libraries. Measure 17-62 to form the Josephine Community Library District will be on the November 4 ballot.

One way to help is through the Neighbor-to-Neighbor program taking place now through September. Volunteers talk with their family, friends, and neighbors about the library district and identify whether they're likely to vote Yes. At least 16,001 Yes votes are needed.

In October, volunteers are needed to walk neighborhoods, talk with residents, place door-hangers, put up lawn signs, and call citizens to remind them to vote.

The Josephine Community Library District will create an independent, self-governing library system serving all of Josephine County. Five community members will be elected at large to serve as board members of the Josephine Community Library District.

For more information, click see Frequently asked questions about the library district<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=c5ueohrab.0.yssg8fqab.oll5kmeab.0&r=3&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.josephinelibrary.org%2Fnews-events%2FDistrictFaq>.
