State Library Partners with CCRLS for New ILS

The State Library is in the developing stages of an exciting new partnership with Chemeketa Cooperative Regional Library Service (CCRLS). You may have heard that CCRLS is migrating to a new integrated library management system (ILS). They've selected the SirsiDynix Symphony integrated library system, along with a full set of additional features to provide the latest library management tools. Very soon the State Library will be sharing this new CCRLS Symphony/Blue Cloud library management system platform. The process is beginning now with plans to complete the migration in late January 2015. In addition to existing features of the current ILS, the new system will allow state agency staff to find books, serials, eBooks, online databases, and digital content all in one search. Additionally, with Single Sign On, patrons will have access to these materials and databases by logging into the system only once.

2014 Oregon Summer Reading Statistics Now Available

[FizzboomRead]In September, libraries reported their 2014 summer reading participation statistics to the State Library. Those statistics have been compiled into the Summer Reading Brief 2014. A total of 207,449 children and teens in Oregon participated in the summer reading program and 69,060 of them reached their reading goal and finished the summer reading program. In addition, 216,250 people attended 4,720 summer reading programs. Libraries can review the statistics they reported in the 2014 Oregon Summer Reading Statistic Spreadsheet<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/Pages/youthsvcs/oregon.srp.certificate.aspx#Oregon_Summer_Reading_Statistics>-this spreadsheet also include libraries' orders for 2015 sweepstakes materials and 2016 manuals. Congratulations to Oregon public libraries on the wonderful work you are doing to help students maintain or improve their reading skills during the summer break.

The Oregon Poetry Collection is Moving

[PoetryPoster]The Oregon Poetry Collection is moving to the University of Oregon Library in Eugene. Items in the collection will not be accessible during the transfer of digital records and physical materials. While many of us are sad to see the Oregon Poetry Collection leave the State Library, the collection should get more use at a University where professors can use materials in their curriculum and students can more easily get their hands on materials for homework and enjoyment. The University of Oregon Library and Oregon Poetry Association will announce when the materials are accessible again. At that time Oregon Poetry Collection will be available statewide through interlibrary loan and the Oregon Library Passport Program which University of Oregon Library participates in.

The Oregon Poetry Collection was established in 2007 by the State Library and Oregon Poetry Association as a project of the Oregon Center for the Book. Items in the collection are written by Oregon poets, past and present, or deal substantially with Oregon subject matter. In November 2014, the Oregon Poetry Association and University of Oregon Library signed a memorandum of understanding to continue to preserve, promote, and make accessible publications of Oregon poets. What Libraries Need to Know about Cover Oregon and the Affordable Care Act in 2015

[HealthHappens]The State Library has made revisions to its guide, Libraries and Cover Oregon, which is now entitled Libraries and the Affordable Care Act in Oregon.<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/Pages/resources/coveroregon.aspx> Cover Oregon continues to provide assistance to 2014 enrollees and can help your patrons sign up for health insurance through the federal HealthCare.gov<https://www.healthcare.gov/> site for 2015. The 2015 enrollment period is open from November 15, 2014 - February 15, 2015. The revised guide continues to provide links to training opportunities and resources available to libraries as they support health insurance enrollment activities. If you need some inspiration for programming ideas, check out the Health Happens in Libraries<https://www.webjunction.org/explore-topics/ehealth/library-stories.html> site. It provides resources and a forum for sharing library stories from across the country.

Deanne Smith Retires

[Deanne]Stacks and Student Worker Coordinator Deanne Smith retired at the end of November, ending a 30-year career at the State Library.

Deanne began her tenure in Acquisitions, filing and typing order forms with six carbon copies. She later moved to Cataloging, where she first processed books, then cataloged Oregon and Federal documents. While she has continued some cataloging duties, most recently she has also been Stacks and Student Worker Coordinator. In fact, Deanne has worked with 14 students workers. While some did not stay long, some have stayed several years. (Former student workers Joel Henderson and Erich Peppler are now permanent employees in the Talking Book and Braille Library).

Over the years, Deanne has seen many changes at the library. Technology and the internet are the major changes she mentioned. But some things have stayed the same, she says, especially "the dedication of the reference librarians to go above and beyond to provide the best customer service to our patrons."

Most staff members are known for one particular talent or ability, and Deanne is no exception. Her ability to find mis-shelved items is amazing, and she says it's also her favorite task: "I love the challenge!"

While she has enjoyed most of the tasks she's performed, she says she won't miss "...is dealing with the dirt and the dust from books that haven't moved off the shelf in 20+ years." Nor will she miss meetings. She will, however, miss her co-workers. "I have worked with many wonderful people over the years," she says. Her co-workers, of course, will miss her.

For her retirement, Deanne is planning on volunteer work, perhaps with Salem Friends of Felines or Marion-Polk Food Share. She and her husband, former OSL reference librarian Craig Smith, are planning travel to Alaska and Hawaii. And she will be spending more time with their three Maine coon cats. "Sleeping in is also on my list of things to do," she says, "that is, if my cats will let me."

Please Take the Digital Inclusion Survey of Public Libraries

If your library has not yet finished or responded to the ALA et al., please take the Digital Inclusion Survey! At this time, the number of libraries that have finished the survey in Oregon are not enough to guarantee the researches will give us any data analysis, graphs, etc. They do a great job of data presentation. The survey results are really used to get and keep libraries in discussions about broadband and more. If you have taken the survey, thanks!
