New Exhibit at the State Library: Remembering William Stafford

[Stafford]The Oregon State Library is opening a new exhibit on February 7, entitled "Remembering William Stafford," honoring the centennial of the birth of the former Oregon Poet Laureate (1975-1990). The exhibit features photographs of the poet loaned by Mike Markee and Vince Wixon, hand-printed broadsides of Stafford's poems, and a selection of poetry books authored by Stafford from the Oregon Poetry Collection (OPC). The OPC - a joint project of the Oregon State Library and Oregon Poetry Association - is a growing collection of poetry books by poets who lived, worked, were educated, or born in Oregon. The collection currently has more than 1600 titles, including more than 50 titles by William Stafford. This exhibit is a part of the State Library's participation in the statewide Oregon Reads 2014<http://oregonreads2014.com/> project, celebrating the literary life of William Stafford.

State Library Staff Ready for Short Legislative Session

[Senate]The 2014 Legislative "Short" session will convene on February 3 and run through March 9, 2014. The session could end earlier, but it cannot run longer unless more than a majority of the House and Senate agree to extend the session. "Short Session" refers to the now regular, but shorter, annual session of the Legislative Assembly, held in even-numbered years, under section 10(1)(b), Article IV of the Oregon Constitution. The Government Research Services staff at the State Library have already been busy answering questions and finding materials for legislators, their staff members, and the public as they prepare to get a lot done in a short amount of time. The new Oregon Legislative Information System<http://www.oregonlegislature.gov/Pages/Session.aspx> has made it much easier to track bills, keep up with committee actions and read testimony.

Library Services and Technology Act Grant Materials Available for FFY2015 Grant Cycle

Got a great idea for a joint automation project? Outreach program? Use of technology? The Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant program may be for you! The application packet for FY2015 grant proposals is available on the web through the LSTA Competitive Grant Program<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/Pages/LSTAcomp.aspx> page. The LSTA program uses a two-step grant process. Short proposals are due April 11. Feel free to check out the proposals from past years, as there may be a project you wish to replicate. Twelve Public Libraries Selected to Participate in National Launch of Edge Initiative

[Edge Logo]The Edge Initiative<http://www.libraryedge.org/> was developed by a coalition of leading library and local government organizations with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and is led by the Urban Libraries Council. It was created with the vision that all people should have opportunities to enrich and improve their lives through open access to information, communication, and technology services provided by public libraries. The twelve selected libraries are part of a national effort to create peer comparison data and reports for all participating Edge libraries. An additional 15 libraries may apply to the Oregon State Library in June to participate beginning shortly after July 1, 2014. Stay tuned for additional details and please contact Darci Hanning<mailto:mailto:darci.hanning at state.or.us?subject=Edge%20Initiative%20in%20Oregon> with any questions.
