On-Call Casual Library Technician (Part-time)

The position serves as a key customer service point of contact for the Portland Community College (PCC) Library. As a member of our On-call Casual Library Technician pool, the successful applicant will assist with the delivery of access services and, under the direction of library supervisors, will provide assistance and technical support to students, staff, faculty, and community patrons in accessing learning materials and resources. On-call Casual Library Technicians perform automated processing of library materials and other duties as assigned. The position requires well-developed communication and interpersonal skills to present and exchange technical and complex information. Work results impact the accuracy, reliability and acceptability of library services beyond the immediate work section. Two years post-secondary education providing skills in research, 6-12 months experience in working courteously and effectively with the public, excellent customer service skills, and collaboration skills as a member of a team, are required. In addition, successful candidates will have proven knowledge of, and abilities using, electronic information resources, Microsoft Office, and other information technologies. Experience with Alma Library Management Service or other ILS is a plus. Casual Library Technicians work on an on-call, as needed, temporary basis throughout our 4 campuses and must have good availability, including evenings and weekends, as requested. General duties include: copy cataloguing using MARC record processes, placing orders, assisting with program implementation, basic circulation functions using an online circulation system, re-shelving books, and other traditional library tasks as assigned. A positive and upbeat approach to customer service and enthusiasm for library work are key characteristics. Experience and training requirement include High School graduation or equivalent; ability to work courteously and effectively with others; ability to operate computers and various software applications. General knowledge of professional practices, procedures, and techniques of library science is desirable. Knowledge of English grammar and usage, ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing required. Salary range is $12.04 - $13.96 per hour.

The Sonoma County Library is a Joint Powers Authority created in 1975 to serve the County's nearly 500,000 residents through 11 full-service locations throughout the county, two rural stations, and specialized collections such as the Wine Library and Genealogy and Local History collections. The Library is governed by an independent seven-member Library Commission in a community in which almost half the service population has a library card. With a $15 million annual budget, a challenge for the new Director and staff (129.5 FTEs) will be to work with the Commission, Library Advisory Boards, Friends of the Library groups, county-wide Library Foundation and other political entities to usher in a new era in community outreach and responsiveness-potentially under a newly revised Joint Powers Agreement.
