---------------------- OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION ----------------------

Performs full scope of clerical and para-professional responsibilities in the operation of the Youth Services Department of the Library, which provides services to patrons, including preschoolers through teens, parents, homeschoolers and teachers. Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen in order to be eligible for employment.



---------------------- RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES -----------------------

01 DUTIES (NOT IN PRIORITY ORDER)

01.     Trains, schedules and reviews the work of Library Assistant II (PT) and volunteers in the Youth Services Department and District branches when needed.

02.     Keeps abreast of library policies and procedures, computer documentation, professional literature; makes suggestions and passes on public input to supervisors.

03.     Suggests procedural and program changes for the Youth Services Department of the Library through participation in workshops, trainings and direct consultation with the department supervisor.

04.     Implements new and continuing programs for the Youth Services Department; assists with researching and preparing grants for youth programs.

05.     Assists Library Department Supervisor in presenting and preparing programs for youth; assists with outreach programs and activities designed to share early literacy skills and information in schools, day cares and other locations where youths gather.

06.     In concert with the Library Department Supervisor, inventories equipment and supplies for use in the Youth Services Department.

07.     Assists Library Department Supervisor in selecting new and replacement materials and assigning status of materials in acquisitions/cataloging systems; assists with re-shelving duties on an on-going basis.

08.     Directly assists patrons (in person, online or by phone) in locating materials and information; provides assistance to impaired patrons by locating material suitable to their needs.

09.     Assists patrons accessing the library online resources and digital collections.

10.     Performs other duties as assigned by Library management team.

  STATUS: Non-Exempt        CLASS/GROUP: 121

PAY TYPE: Hourly         SALARY/GRADE: LH08  RANGE: $11.04 - $11.99



--------------------------- WORK SCHEDULE ----------------------------

This is a full-time position. The normal work schedule is 40 hours per week; exact schedules are assigned by management. It is the attendance standard of the employer that all employees be present and on times each shift they are scheduled to work. Full or partial absence during any scheduled shift, arriving late, or leaving early, for whatever reason, may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.  Time off may be approved if allowed by applicable policies covering illness, injury, or other personal emergency.





----------------- EDUCATIONAL/VOCATIONAL PREPARATION -----------------

Requires a knowledge of current procedures, practices and philosophy of library operation; experience in many aspects of library circulation. Requires experience working with children and knowledge of Early Literacy and/or Early Childhood Education. Requires at least a HS diploma, a 2 years degree preferred.  Verbal proficiency in Spanish preferred.

Over 3 months up to and including 6 months (excluding the orientation time required of a fully qualified worker to become accustomed to the special conditions of any new job).
