State Library Board to Meet in Monroe

The State Library Board will meet at the Monroe Community Library in Monroe, Oregon on Friday, June 20, 2014, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Board will hear recommendations from the Library Services and Technology Act Council concerning LSTA project proposals. They will also consider recommendations from the Talking Book and Braille Services Advisory Council about expenditure of donation funds in 2014-15. An open forum will be held at 11:30 a.m. Anyone may address the Board at the open forum on any topic.

Children of State Employees Visit the State Library

[BYCTWD]State employees and their children enjoyed activities at the State Library during Bring Your Child to Work Day in April. Parents and children toured the library building and learned about library resources by taking part in several hands-on activities. Genealogy volunteers assisted with family history research and filling in a family tree. Children used microfilm to read about the Apollo 11 lunar landing on July 21, 1969. City directories were used to find out, "Who used to live in your house?" The beautiful bronze medallions of state symbols, located in the State Library, were used to complete a crossword puzzle. Each participant received a special packet to take home. Forty-five parents and children attended.

Public Library Statistical Cooperative Passes Changes to Annual Public Library Survey

The national group that coordinates public library surveys has added a new item to the annual public library statistical survey. Starting this summer, we will try to add a count of annual wireless sessions. The definition of Reference Transactions was simplified. The fiscal year 2014 survey should be released in late July, 2014. For more information, please contact Ann Reed<mailto:ann.reed at state.or.us>.

Access to LearningExpress Library 2.0 ends in June

[LELLogo]Just a reminder for those libraries who have not yet migrated to LearningExpress Library 3.0 that access to the older version (2.0) will be ending June 30. Users should be encouraged to finish any tests or tutorials they have started in 2.0, since this work will not transfer to version 3.0. Users are required to re-register their accounts when first using version 3.0. See the LearningExpress Library transition FAQ<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/technology/sdlp/LearningExpress/FAQ_LEL3.0.docx> for more information. Information about how to access version 3.0 was sent library directors in January 2014. Did you know...?

The open source 'mailman<http://www.list.org/>' community has told us that the Oregon State Library hosts one of the largest 'mailman<http://www.list.org/>' mailing list installations in existence. Perhaps even the largest, but who keeps exact count? This open source software is utilized by many universities.

We host 800+ mailing lists on behalf of state agencies and the Oregon library community.

There are just shy of 600,000 total subscribers within these 800+ lists.

The Department of Administrative Services is our largest client. We host nearly 120 lists for DAS. The remainder of the Top 5 includes ourselves, the Oregon State Library with (82), Oregon Department of Education (81), Department of Human Services (61), and Oregon Health Authority (46).

Our largest list consists of over 42,000 subscribers. We utilize state employee-wide lists for purposes ranging from PEBB health announcements to PERS retirement information. One particular list of interest is "flagnotifications" where a staff member from the governor's office instructs schools and offices to lower flags to half-staff.

Lists can be archived and in the case of Libs-Or, posts are available as far back as June 2007. The Libs-Or archive<http://listsmart.osl.state.or.us/pipermail/libs-or/> is not searchable as we host too many lists with too much traffic & data for indexing. However, archives can be sorted by: Thread, Author, and Date. An archive for an entire month can be downloaded as a text file.

The earliest Libs-Or post in our archive was posted by Diedre Conkling about the following topic: "ALA Files Comments to FCC on Three Telecom Issues".

Is Your Library the Best Small Library in America?

[LJLogo]Library Journal and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are looking for the Best Small Library in America. After a decade of honoring exceptional service to small and rural communities, there are still many small libraries in every state waiting to be recognized for delivering some of the most innovative and much-needed library services in the U.S.

If your library serves fewer than 25,000 patrons, please consider submitting an entry to the award, describing what makes your library great. The process is simple - tell your story in two pages, share key statistics, and add two letters of support from other library professionals who know your library's impact.

The winning library will receive a $20,000 cash award, a feature story in the February 1, 2015, Library Journal, membership and conference costs for two library representatives to attend the Public Library Association Biannual Conference in 2016, including a gala reception. Two finalist libraries will receive a $10,000 cash award as well as membership and conference costs for two library representatives to attend the PLA conference and special mention in the Library Journal magazine.

Impact Survey is Free to use until October 2014

[ISLogo]The Impact Survey is an online survey tool designed specifically for public libraries that want to better understand their communities and how people use their public technology resources and services. Written and validated by research staff at the University of Washington Information School, the Impact Survey is designed to quickly and easily provide busy librarians with useful data on how their patrons use library technology services. The program saves libraries the time and costs associated with writing, programming, analyzing, and reporting an in-house survey. The tool includes:

* Cut and paste code with a variety of options for linking to the survey.
* Easy-to-read data-oriented reports detailing survey results in charts and graphs.
* Advocacy-oriented communication tools showcasing survey results.
* Downloadable data for libraries that want to do deeper analysis of their survey results.

Know your community. Improve your technology services. Understanding your community is essential to providing patrons with the technology services they need. The Impact Survey asks patrons about how they use library technology services like public computers, wireless networks, online resources, digital literacy training, as well as outcome-oriented use in the following areas: education, employment, entrepreneurship, health & wellness, eGovernment, civic engagement, eCommerce, and social inclusion.
