Hi Oregon Libraries:

By now you have probably heard of the stORytime campaign, an effort from the state to build awareness of the importance of early literacy. The State Library sent out information about it.

One aspect of it is to get more books into the hands of school kids. To this end, there is the ability, through Scholastic Books, to donate as little as $2.50 to give books to the school of your choice (in Oregon). And until Dec. 31, Umpqua Banks is matching all donations to Scholastic Books to provide books to schools. That essentially means a 2 for 1! Who does not love that kind of deal?! It's super easy. Here is the web site: https://shop.scholastic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/DonateView?storeId=10751&org=STOR&campaign=STOR14

You can also support this on Facebook, if that is your means of spreading the word. Here is that link: https://www.facebook.com/umpquabank. And they are on Twitter: https://twitter.com/umpquabank

We typically would not use this forum for fundraising purposes; however, this is for kids and books for literacy and for a program the State Library supports. We decided it was important to get the word out. Please join me and the PLD Board in supporting this effort in whatever way seems right to you. Remember, Umpqua Bank will match donations until Dec. 31.

Thanks everyone for your generosity.

The Oregon PTA has partnered with the Oregon Education Investment Board, Scholastic Books, and Umpqua Bank in a Statewide Literacy Campaign. As part of OEIB's effort to put all students on track for 3rd grade reading proficiency, the "stORytime" campaign recognizes the critical role of families in the development of basic skills and vocabulary development. The campaign urges parents to find every day, everywhere opportunities to talk, play, read and sing with their children, in any language. StORytime was developed with communities throughout the state, who represent the many families and children in Oregon. It was designed to meet families where they are and empower them to become their child's first teacher. The campaign was created to build awareness for the connection of literacy and lifelong success, and to galvanize communities to come together to support families to ensure that children are reading on track by third grade.

One feature of the stORytime campaign is an effort to get books into the homes of students across the state through an online book donation portal. Donors can purchase Scholastic books for $2.50 and are issued a tax-deductible receipt from Oregon PTA. Books will be distributed to the elementary school of the donor's choice or can be sent to a school with the greatest need for books. The Umpqua Bank Charitable Foundation will be matching donations, up to $100,000. Together, we've set a goal to get 80,000 books in the homes of Oregon students.
