The workshop is organized by the Orbis-Cascade Alliance Research Interest Group, with co-sponsors the Alliance Assessment Team and ACRL-Oregon. Attendance is not limited to Alliance and ACRL-OR members.
This research methods workshop will include:
* Ethical use of data
* Levels of measurement (Nominal, Ordinal, Interval, Ratio variables; also independent and dependent variables)
* Data cleaning
* Creating new variables: recoding, renaming, transforming, collapsing
* Analysis: descriptive and comparative techniques
* Data presentation, both in technical format for journal publication and also for general audience, e.g. administrators
* Survey design as well as using existing data (e.g., circulation numbers, library frequency, etc.).
* Workshop registrants will also receive access to a follow-up webinar at a date to be determined.
UP Communication Studies professor Jennette Lovejoy teaches the Research Methods course as well as media and journalism courses News Writing and Reporting, Multimedia Journalism, Public Affairs Reporting, and Media & Society. Her research interests span media effects, online media, health communication, and discourses and beliefs about health and disease. Her research has been published in leading communication journals such as Communication Methods and Measures, Health Communication, Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, and Mass Communication and Society and presented at several national and international conferences. Recently, her book chapter "Violence, Bias, or Fair Journalism? Understanding Portland Media Coverage of an Episodic Protest" was published in an award-winning book on the Occupy movement. In 2009, she was awarded 'Most Promising Professor' by the Mass Communication and Society division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC). For the 2010-2011 academic year, the Associated Students of the University of Portland (ASUP) chose and awarded Dr. Lovejoy as the Faculty Member of the Year. In 2014, she received "The Difference Award" for UP student athletes.
