Red wine reduces heart disease. Dark chocolate lowers blood pressure.
Vaccines cause Autism. These have all appeared in some form as news
headlines. Perhaps your patrons have come in seeking information they've
read about in the newspaper or heard on the news. Your Pacific Northwest
Regional office for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (
<http://nnlm.gov/pnr> NN/LM PNR) is offering a Moodle class called Health
Issues in the Headlines: Reading Between the Lines, the second of a series
of classes we are offering regarding consumer health. Participants will
learn about how health is reported in the news as well as how to evaluate
the accuracy and validity of science and health stories. The impact of
celebrity illness will also be discussed. By the end of this course,
participants will be better equipped to help their patrons look more
critically at health issues that are being reported in the news media.

This online class is self-paced and is free. It runs from Wednesday August
5th through Wednesday September 2nd and is worth 4 Medical Library
Association CE credits. These credits qualify towards the Consumer Health
Information Specialization <https://www.mlanet.org/education/chc> with the
Medical Library Association. You don't have to be a member to qualify for
this. Two more classes be coming the next few months.

Registration is going on right now, just go to
https://nnlm.gov/pnr/training/register.html?schedule_id=3465

It is best to have a Moodle account so if you don't already have one,
information should be given to you to link to Moodle where you can sign in
or sign up to create an account. You can always email me if you have any
problems doing this.

Once the class begins make sure you are using the Health Issues in the
Headlines: Reading Between the Lines PNR as other regions may be offering
the class too.
