Subject: 5th gr. sci-fi read-a-loud?

A new young teacher for 4th and 5th grade is looking for a good read-aloud of science fiction books including body system, plants, mixtures/solutions and earth science emphasizing water.
We've already discussed City of Ember and A Wrinkle in Time, but we're having a hard time coming up with new interesting fiction read-a-loud for these topics. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
