State Library Coloring Book Now Available
[Swallowtail]The State Library building houses many pieces of public art, acquired through the Oregon Percent for Art Program. The polished granite panels on the reference desk and bronze medallions lining the second floor hallway are the creations of Oregon artist Dennis Cunningham. The medallions depict the symbols of Oregon and historical icons Sarah Winnemucca, Chief Joseph, Tabitha Brown, and John McLoughlin. Years ago, the information embedded in the medallions was incorporated into a crossword puzzle, the ?State Library Treasure Hunt?, a handout for students. This past April, they became the basis of a coloring book, created by Web Services Librarian Claire Bolyard, for the library?s Take Your Child to Work day activities. With the consent of the artist, it has been added to the State Library Digital Collections. We hope that you?ll enjoy the Oregon State Library Bronze Medallion Coloring Book.
State Library Welcomes Melissa Krueck
[MKrueck]The Oregon State Library is pleased to introduce Melissa Krueck as the newest member of the Operations Division, serving as our Volunteer and Fund Development Coordinator. Melissa comes to the State Library from the King County Health Department in Seattle, where she was the Emergency Preparedness and Training Coordinator. In that role, she worked with a variety of staff, volunteers, and partner agencies relating to potential health threats. Melissa also has a wide variety of experience coordinating volunteers from her experience in the U.S. Coast Guard. Melissa has been with the State Library since April 14, 2016.

2017 Ready to Read Grant Applications Now Available
The 2017 Ready to Read grant applications have been mailed to library directors at all eligible public libraries and are available on the Ready to Read webpage. One hundred and thirty three Oregon libraries are eligible to apply for a total of $707,963 in state funds, which is an average of 94? per youth 0-14 years old. Applications must be date-stamped by August 31, 2016, or earlier.
Ready to Read Grants are the only state funds public libraries in Oregon receive. State funds are distributed annually to legally established public libraries through this non-competitive grant program. The amount of money each library may apply for is pre-determined by State Library staff using a formula based on the population in and square miles of each library?s service area or a minimum grant of $1,000. Libraries may spend these funds on early literacy activities for children birth through age 6 and/or Oregon statewide summer reading activities for children birth through age 14.
Direct any questions to Katie Anderson (503-378-2528).

Three statewide projects were also funded, including Oregon Battle of the Books, Oregon School Library Information System (OSLIS), and the Sage Courier project. Subject: Seeking Pulic Library Division Board Nominations
The PLD Board is seeking nominations for secretary (one year term), chair-elect (three year term) and two board members (two year terms). If you are an enthusiastic, engaged and eager member of the public library division this opportunity is for you. We meet once a month, primarily in the valley, for 3-5 hours. Attending meetings virtually is also an option. Our projects for the upcoming year include:
1. OLA conference (PLD dinner, preconference and any other conferences we may consider)
2. The Library Director's Annual Meeting which will include an educational component.
3. Oregon Library Standards review.
4. Supporting new measurement tools such as the Edge Initiative and PLA's Project Outcome
5. ...and much, much more...
If this sounds like an exciting opportunity for you, and you have the time to give (average estimate is 10-15 hours/month), we look forward to your nomination. Nominations should include a brief bio and how you can contribute to the PLD Board. Please send your nominations to me via email by June 30th. Ballots will go out in early July. Terms are two years long and will begin in September, 2016.
Thank you,

The following title is available for interlibrary loan from the Oregon State Library.

Purcell, Aaron D. Digital Library Programs for Libraries and Archives: Developing, Managing, and Sustaining Unique Digital Collection.
Neal Schuman, 2016. ISBN: 978-0-8389-1450-2
Description
Using both theory and examples of best practices, Purcell offers strategies for approaching digital collections as an ongoing library service. Learn how to go from project to program, or how to start a digital program from scratch, even with limited resources.
Table of Contents
A detailed table of contents is available on the LIS Collection blog: http://osl-lis.blogspot.com/2016/07/digital-library-programs-for-libraries.html
If you would like to request this or other materials from the Oregon State Library please use your library's established interlibrary loan process (e.g. OCLC or ALA request form). Otherwise, send your full name, the name of your library, complete title information, shipping address, and a phone number to the document delivery department at library.request at state.or.us or (fax) 503-588-7119. Items will be checked out to your library, not to you personally, for 4 weeks (print materials) or 2 weeks (videos). Materials will be delivered via mail or Orbis Cascade Alliance Courier, and you may return them the same way. Normally a single copy is purchased and is loaned on a first-come-first-serve basis. You may be put on a hold list for several weeks.
Most library staff are able to use their library's interlibrary loan service to borrow professional development material. However, if you do not have access to these services or are not currently affiliated with a library, please contact me to discuss alternative options for borrowing the material.
Be sure to check out our Library and Information Science (LIS) blog to discover the most recent additions to our LIS collection and search our catalog for our complete holdings. The library science collection is meant to support the whole Oregon library community. Library Support and Development Services welcomes your suggestions for acquisitions - see the blog for an input form or email us!
This collection is supported in whole by the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Library Services and Technology Act, administered by the Oregon State Library.

*RED ALERT: Dr. Hayden Needs Your Help!*
Just seven days. That?s how long the Senate will be in session this week
and next before leaving Washington until after Labor Day. Because the
Senate?s schedule will be even more compressed and chaotic when Members
return prior to Election Day, and a post-election ?lame duck? session is
not assured, *right now is by far the best chance we have to help Dr. Carla

ALA Neal-Schuman, 2016. ISBN: 978-0-8389-1397-0
Publisher's Description

In this important new book, bestselling author and expert instructional librarian Burkhardt decodes the Framework, putting its conceptual approach into straightforward language while offering more than 50 classroom-ready Framework-based exercises. Guiding instructors towards helping students cross each threshold, this book discusses ... [read more at http://osl-lis.blogspot.com/2016/07/teaching-info-lit-reframed.html].

Observations from Oregon
Message-ID:
A recent article in *Library Journal,* ?First Year College Readiness
,?
highlights some of research skills academic librarians have observed first
year students struggling with when they reach college.
Last month, Arlene Weible, ACRL-OR's State Library Representative, sent out
an informal survey to ask ACRL-OR members and other academic librarians
involved in library instruction to relay their thoughts about first year
college students' skills and if Oregon academic librarians had similar
observations, given the decrease in licensed school librarians in the state.

Editors Sarah Steiner and Miriam Rigby invite the submission of chapter proposals for a book on library instruction. The book's primary focus is student motivation, with an emphasis on motivational techniques that can be incorporated into instruction settings where time is of the essence: one-shots, quick introductions, video tutorials, etc. We are open to studies that branch away from higher education as long as they focus on adult learners.
New and completed research and case studies are welcome, provided any new studies can be completed within the timeline explained below. Chapters based on completed research must not be previously published or simultaneously submitted elsewhere.
We are seeking proposals for two types of chapters:
1. Research/case studies/explorations of the following motivation-related topics (multiple studies desired for each):
o Establishing a connection between student needs and interests and the value of information literacy topics/frames
o Building intrinsic motivation via positive outcome expectancies or efficacy expectancies
o Inspiring students to learn by employing learning goals rather than performance goals
o Allowing students to set their own learning goals
o Encouraging play and discovery, social connection, and supportive learning environments
o Creating appropriate levels of challenge through communication of expectations, class activities, active learning activities, or assessments
2. Instruction exercises that use/encourage the above.
Submission procedure: Please submit chapter proposals of up to 500 words, a short author's statement, and a writing sample, to infolitmotivation at gmail.com by October 1, 2016. If you are proposing new, uncompleted research, please provide a tentative timeline that includes a date for submitting your research plan to your Human Subjects/Institutional Review Board, if appropriate, as well as any additional dates you think are relevant. Authors will be notified of acceptance before December 1, 2016.
If there are multiple authors for a chapter, please submit author statements for each author and at least one writing sample - it is optional to provide multiple writing samples (i.e. not all co-authors have to submit writing samples, but if you feel it best represents your team to submit more than one, please do.)
Note: This initial stage requires a 500 word description, so just planning out your article now is fine. Final manuscripts of between 1500 and 5000 words will be due July 2017, with drafts and edits staggered earlier throughout the year as best fits the schedules of the author(s) and editors. All chapters will undergo peer review by a subject matter expert prior to publication.

The Califa Library Group is accepting applications for mini-grants to
librarians in rural public libraries and under-resourced urban libraries
who are interested in providing science-based adult programming focused on
local weather challenges and threats.
The project, which is funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA), will build your capacity to plan and facilitate
science-based library programs in partnership with NOAA scientists. The
library programs use videos and popular books to engage audiences and
promote discussion. The professional development will include interactive
webinars, online learning materials, peer support, and video case studies
of similar adult STEM programs.
Participating libraries will receive program materials, a planning guide,
marketing and promotional templates, and $1,000 for the three-part program
series.
Through exploration and discussion, participants will become aware of
online tools that can provide information for their own community, family
and individual planning for extreme weather and other climate events.
