Return to top of page State Library News State Library Coloring Book Now Available [Swallowtail]The State Library building houses many pieces of public art, acquired through the Oregon Percent for Art Program. The polished granite panels on the reference desk and bronze medallions lining the second floor hallway are the creations of Oregon artist Dennis Cunningham. The medallions depict the symbols of Oregon and historical icons Sarah Winnemucca, Chief Joseph, Tabitha Brown, and John McLoughlin. Years ago, the information embedded in the medallions was incorporated into a crossword puzzle, the ?State Library Treasure Hunt?, a handout for students. This past April, they became the basis of a coloring book, created by Web Services Librarian Claire Bolyard, for the library?s Take Your Child to Work day activities. With the consent of the artist, it has been added to the State Library Digital Collections. We hope that you?ll enjoy the Oregon State Library Bronze Medallion Coloring Book. One hundred and thirty three Oregon libraries are eligible to apply for a total of $707,963 in state funds, which is an average of 94? per youth 0-14 years old. Applications must be date-stamped by August 31, 2016, or earlier. Ready to Read Grants are the only state funds public libraries in Oregon receive. State funds are distributed annually to legally established public libraries through this non-competitive grant program. The amount of money each library may apply for is pre-determined by State Library staff using a formula based on the population in and square miles of each library?s service area or a minimum grant of $1,000. Libraries may spend these funds on early literacy activities for children birth through age 6 and/or Oregon statewide summer reading activities for children birth through age 14. Direct any questions to Katie Anderson (503-378-2528). The book's primary focus is student motivation, with an emphasis on motivational techniques that can be incorporated into instruction settings where time is of the essence: one-shots, quick introductions, video tutorials, etc. We are open to studies that branch away from higher education as long as they focus on adult learners. New and completed research and case studies are welcome, provided any new studies can be completed within the timeline explained below. Chapters based on completed research must not be previously published or simultaneously submitted elsewhere. We are seeking proposals for two types of chapters: 1. Research/case studies/explorations of the following motivation-related topics (multiple studies desired for each): o Establishing a connection between student needs and interests and the value of information literacy topics/frames o Building intrinsic motivation via positive outcome expectancies or efficacy expectancies o Inspiring students to learn by employing learning goals rather than performance goals o Allowing students to set their own learning goals o Encouraging play and discovery, social connection, and supportive learning environments o Creating appropriate levels of challenge through communication of expectations, class activities, active learning activities, or assessments 2. Instruction exercises that use/encourage the above. Submission procedure: Please submit chapter proposals of up to 500 words, a short author's statement, and a writing sample, to infolitmotivation at gmail.com by October 1, 2016. If you are proposing new, uncompleted research, please provide a tentative timeline that includes a date for submitting your research plan to your Human Subjects/Institutional Review Board, if appropriate, as well as any additional dates you think are relevant. Authors will be notified of acceptance before December 1, 2016. If there are multiple authors for a chapter, please submit author statements for each author and at least one writing sample - it is optional to provide multiple writing samples (i.e. not all co-authors have to submit writing samples, but if you feel it best represents your team to submit more than one, please do.) Note: This initial stage requires a 500 word description, so just planning out your article now is fine. Final manuscripts of between 1500 and 5000 words will be due July 2017, with drafts and edits staggered earlier throughout the year as best fits the schedules of the author(s) and editors. All chapters will undergo peer review by a subject matter expert prior to publication. In this course, Alison Macrina of the Library Freedom Project will teach about strategies and tools that can taught to patrons to computer classes and one-on-one tech sessions, or installed on patrons PCs, to help safeguard digital privacy and take back our right to read and research freely in the internet age. Alison will cover basic concepts in digital privacy and tools that are appropriate for a range of technical abilities. These tools cover search tracking, behavioral tracking, safe browsing, encrypted communications and more. Learning Objectives: - Gain some basic knowledge of major surveillance programs and authorizations, how proprietary digital tools track users, and the effects of surveillance on privacy and intellectual freedom. - Understand basic concepts in digital privacy like encryption, FLOSS, personally identifiable information, plain text, decentralization, etc. - Learn how web browsers track you, and private and anonymous alternatives to mainstream browsers. - Learn how websites and third-party trackers follow you across the web, and how to blind the trackers and make websites more secure. - Identify some of the major privacy and security problems with mobile devices and some ways to minimize mobile tracking. - Learn at least one advanced level security tool (PGP, OTR, I2P, TrueCrypt, etc.). Alison Macrina is a librarian, privacy rights activist, and the founder and director of the Library Freedom Project, an initiative which aims to make real the promise of intellectual freedom in libraries by teaching librarians and their local communities about surveillance threats, privacy rights and law, and privacy-protecting technology tools to help safeguard digital freedoms. Alison is passionate about connecting surveillance issues to larger global struggles for justice, demystifying privacy and security technologies for ordinary users, and resisting an internet controlled by a handful of intelligence agencies and giant multinational corporations. When she?s not doing any of that, she?s reading. Read an interview with Alison Macrina about her work and about this course: http://libraryjuicepress.com/blog/?p=5165 This is an online class that is taught asynchronously, meaning that participants do the work on their own time as their schedules allow. The class does not meet together at any particular times, although the instructor may set up optional sychronous chat sessions. Instruction includes readings and assignments in one-week segments. Health Services Research and Development Service (HSR&D) established the VA Evidence-based Synthesis Program to provide timely and accurate syntheses of scientific research evidence on targeted healthcare topics of particular importance to VA clinicians, managers, and policymakers, as they work to improve the health and healthcare of Veterans. This national research program is comprised of four research centers located at the Minneapolis, Durham, Portland, and West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Medical Centers, each with an active university affiliation and close links to the Agency for Health Care Research & Quality (AHRQ) Evidence-based Practice Centers. The ESP synthesizes scientific research evidence on important clinical practice topics, and these reports help the VHA: 1) develop clinical policies informed by evidence, 2) implement effective services to improve patient outcomes and to support VHA clinical practice guidelines and performance measures, and 3) set the direction for future research to address gaps in clinical knowledge. The ESP disseminates these reports throughout the VHA, and many evidence syntheses have informed the clinical guidelines of large professional organizations. The program receives approximately $1.5 million in HSR&D/QUERI funding per year, which is used to support over 25 staff involved in conducting dozens of evidence synthesis projects each fiscal year. The ESPCC is charged with oversight of national ESP program operations, program development and evaluation, and dissemination efforts. The ESPCC establishes standard operating procedures for the production of evidence synthesis reports; facilitates a national topic nomination, prioritization, and selection process; manages the research portfolio of each Center; facilitates editorial review processes; ensures methodological consistency and quality of products; produces Rapid Response Evidence Briefs at the request of VHA senior leadership; collaborates with HSR&D Center for Information Dissemination and Education Resources (CIDER) to develop a national dissemination strategy for all ESP products; and interfaces with stakeholders to effectively engage the program. 2 *Major Duties * The Health Science Specialist?s primary focus will be to support the conduct of Rapid Response Evidence Briefs and initial scoping of review topics for assignment to ESP Centers. Review topics often focus on health services delivery and policy and process of care and address the broader social issues among Veterans. Because of the emphasis on collaboration between VA operations and the evidence review team, ESP work products can have a strong impact on national policy. Best-qualified candidates will have knowledge of the principles, practices, procedures, and techniques for conducting systematic reviews of scientific literature; ability to read and assess the internal validity and strength of evidence of scientific research studies; and proficiency with providing specialist information retrieval support for a wide range of health topics from a variety of scientific bibliographic databases across multiple platforms. Preference will be given to those with a master?s degree in library sciences, public health, epidemiology, health policy, health services, medical anthropology, or behavioral sciences, and 3 years of experience working in a research setting. *KSAO'S or JOB ELEMENT * *DUTIES * 1. We would love to show Dr. Hayden that she has our full support and admiration for her leadership as the head of librarian of congress. It was with your support and donations that we were able to work alongside so many other great organizations to make this possible. We spent hundreds of dollars putting our petition and email platform in front of hundreds of thousands of Americans who care about these issues. The letters of support that you signed on to and sent from both ALA's and EveryLibrary's platforms as well as all of the great press from non-library publications like techdirt, HuffingtonPost, and Politico really had an impact and it wouldn't have been possible without you. You make a big difference in the fight for libraries. Please consider helping us continue this work with a one time or monthly donation today or by signing on to one of our many other petitions . Thank you so much. ------------------------------ ------------------------------ EveryLibrary http://action.everylibrary.org/ Here's the full petition: *Congratulate Carla Hayden Today!* Please join EveryLibrary in sending congratulations to Dr. Carla Hayden, our new Librarian of Congress, by signing below with your personal comment or reflection of congratulations along with your name. We'll send the book, along with a nice bouquet from all of us, to her this week. We have high hopes for Dr. Hayden's tenure as Librarian of Congress. The following seems like a great opportunity for any library that is actively providing STEM programming or considering it. Please follow-up directly with Angela Brade (angela.brade at hclibrary.org ) from the Howard County Library System (Maryland) for more information. Howard County Library System (HCLS)in Maryland is seeking help with testing a new train-the-trainer STEM app by August 8th. This is part of an IMLS grant project. We are hoping to get library staff around the country interested in testing STEM Train the Trainer tools to give us feedback so we know how to develop. We need library staff to: - Read the introduction which gives them a context - Go through the modules to learn about both topics - Complete each of the short survey at the end of each topic Here is the link... http://hclibrary.org/hitech/stemflash BACKGROUND: In an effort to identify new ways to share STEM curriculum, to train library staff, and to replicate STEM educational models, HCLS is launching a pilot under the HiTech initiative. The working title of the Pilot is STEM Flash. The STEM Flash pilot will be used to test the concept of flash instructional STEM training for library staff at a venue that is outside of the HCLS HiTech classroom. The pilot will allow library personnel an opportunity to use the online tool, examine all of the components, process how they might utilize the information for their targeted age group, and provide valuable feedback regarding modifications to improve the tool. The STEM Flash pilot will be tested with the help of library staff from other library systems, external to HCLS, who are currently instructing or may instruct students or adults in the future. This test will take place over a 2-week period where participants are asked to use the app to independently train and evaluate the usability of the app and information contained in the app. The app will close two weeks from the launch date. All participants are asked to complete the surveys so the team can make recommendations for improvements. As people participate and go through the modules included in this pilot, we hope they will consider: ? Would I be able to teach a class on the specified topic after working through this tutorial? ? What aspects of the tutorial did I like the most? And, what did I like the least? ? What do I think might be inhibitors to teaching a STEM class based on the materials and content provided? ? Are the examples given in the tutorial easy to understand? ? What other assistance would I need to make me feel comfortable teaching? ? What other information can I recommend or share that might help improve the tutorial? The training link can be opened from a mobile phone, computer or tablet. The mobile training site is http://hclibrary.org/hitech/stemflash WHAT IS HITECH? HiTech, Howard County Library System's STEM digital media lab for teens, delivers cutting-edge science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education via hands-on video, music, game app, and e-book projects. The initiative teaches students ages 11-18 the critical skill sets needed for 21st century careers. Leveraging the best technology, teaching tools, and experts to deliver a top-quality STEM education experience, HiTech incorporates an innovative methodology that blends instruction with experiential learning and peer-to-peer communications. Envisioned as a launching point for the STEM career pipeline, HiTech focuses on producing the next generation of scientists, mathematicians, and engineers needed in the community and nationwide. The initiative capitalizes on Howard County's advantage as home to a number of major STEM-oriented employers and higher education institutions. HiTech is an award winning STEM Educational initiative started at HCLS in 2012. Since its inception, HiTech has been focused on innovative and immersive educational curriculum design and development. The results of the HiTech Model are evident in the teenage (11-17 year olds) registration which surpassed 11,500 registrants in just four years; as well as, the numerous articles and news press coverage about the curriculum. Thank you for your participation and we look forward to hearing your feedback! On the one hand, it's true enough that they may find down the line that the tech we're using is hurting people - causing cancer, etc. That said, it seems unlikely that something so small as segregating a terminal will effect that, since there are cell towers and wifi all over in so many cities. I've personally known people who seem to think these small things will make a difference, though, like a woman who would get angry if anyone used a remote control when sitting behind her. As for headaches, I don't know. I don't want to dismiss anyone's beliefs or pain out of hand. I know that there are lots of people, myself included, who get headaches from using computers or cell phones, but that may have as much or more to do with bright lights/contrast of screens and the quality of speakers than with any signals flying through the air. I'll be interested to hear more opinions. I know this doesn't offer a solid answer, sorry about that. Just two cents. Her best option would be to perhaps purchase something smaller such as a tablet (smaller than a computer, therefore smaller electromagnetic field) for herself that she could use away from other people on wifi. For most of us, the bottom line is that on the electromagnetic scale, radio waves are at the low end of the scale, below microwaves because they are longer waves so they are less invasive. The opposite (high) end of the scale is X-Rays and Gamma rays which are known to cause cancer because the waves they send out are much shorter so they can travel through more things. Hope this helps! I wanted to pass along some information. I went to a SuperQuest training here in Central Oregon last week and learned how to do basic block coding to make apps (using MIT?s App Inventor). It was a well done course and I plan on using it for fall teen programming. They have upcoming trainings throughout the state with a variety of topics. And did I mention: it?s free! It?s marketed towards teachers, but we library folk were welcomed with open arms. Here?s alink with more information. The upcoming trainings are in Newport, Eugene, and White City (Southern Oregon). They?ll also have another round next summer if you missed the one in your community this year. ? Happy summer, Josie ? It's difficult to talk about, since most people don't experience the headaches, chest pains, and other symptoms that wireless and smartphone signals visit upon those of us with this condition. It is a tangible physical response, and it is very real. The depiction on "Better Call Saul" was inaccurate and isn't a helpful reference point, to be honest. It can be hard to determine the source of EHS pain, and its sufferers may indeed have a tendency to seem, or become, paranoid regarding technology in all its forms. Your patron will have to make peace with the fact that she will get at least a low-level headache every time she comes into the library due to the presence of a wifi network. To live with EHS is to always have at least a low-level headache, but sitting in the "path" of an active signal brings on a sudden headache that disappears when the device stops sending or receiving data. She's right that smartphones are a major trigger, at least while they are online. She would also want to avoid sitting near wireless printers or routers. I manage my headaches by using wired internet and a dumbphone (no internet, just calls and texts). A tablet would not help in this case, as it would have to connect to a wireless network for internet access. But I don't believe that anyone should be excused from going through your security gates (!) even if it causes brief discomfort. ?I understand your patron's frustration, but it's probably impossible to make the library a place where she doesn't experience EHS pain. My advice: believe her, express compassion, and perhaps find her a book on the subject. Here's one called Zapped . Until EHS is a federally recognized disability, that may be all you can do. Message-ID: UX in Oregon Libraries The fall issue of OLA Quarterly is dedicated to exploring user experience practices in Oregon libraries. By user experience, we mean looking at the whole of a user's experience with a library as well as the human-computer interaction. What are you doing in your library to enhance the user's experience? What tools is your library using or experimenting with? How do you assess the user experience? What has worked and what hasn't worked? This issue is about the state of user experience in Oregon libraries. The fall issue guest editor is Joe Marquez. He is the Web Services librarian at the Reed College Library. If you are interested in writing for OLA-Q, please submit your ideas (title and a brief description) via email to the guest editor for review. The guest editor will review submissions and respond to all authors in a timely manner. He can be reached at jmarquez at reed.edu. Please add "OLA-Q" in the subject line of your email. Deadlines: All ideas for articles are due by August 15. If your idea is selected, final drafts of articles will be required by October 15. The fall issue will be out on November 15. The article length averages 1,000 to 2,500 words. OLAQ authors retain the rights to their articles, and some have gone on to publish in magazines such as American Libraries. Based on the number of implementation tasks and the available training schedule, we have made the decision to delay re-activating the statewide service until Monday, October 3rd. At that time, we expect to have Oregon library staff and volunteers staffing the statewide service in addition to libraries being able to provide local service to their own patrons. While we realize that this is inconvenient for many libraries, we want to do everything possible to implement a successful re-launch of Answerland. Delaying the launch of the new software is the best approach to ensuring we are bringing up a stable, high-quality service staffed by librarians and volunteers who are confident in using the new software to answer our patrons questions. During the statewide service downtime, current Answerland partner libraries are welcome to use the new software to chat with their own patrons. Please send an email to answer.land at state.or.us and include your full contact information (name, library name, contact email and phone number) if you are a current Answerland partner library and would like to activate your local service before October 3rd. In support of the re-launch in October, we will provide promotional and marketing materials to libraries so you can spread the word to your patrons once the service is back. Additional information on how to receive promotional materials will be announced in September. We appreciate your continued patience during this transition and are looking forward to a successful statewide re-launch in October. Check out the description; we cover a lot of territory. This is a great opportunity to see what you can have at your library. These workshops are high quality, information-rich, and I always provide comprehensive Resource Lists. Every participant has said they enjoy them and would recommend them [I give out evaluation forms]! I would love to see us do an outcomes-based study on the effect of the workshops on civic attitudes and participation. If we could show that people actually improve their knowledge, thinking and/or behavior, how wonderful would that be for the library world. Since I have taught evaluation and assessment at Emporia, was the L-net evaluator after the pilot year, and have conducted numerous needs assessments when consulting, I guess you could say this is a match made in heaven. Think about this for your library system. Donna Here are the latest updates from my Civics for Adults Facebook page. I've been posting some very helpful resources - don't want you folks to miss out! Message-ID: <810CC03BDFB8D94883767344C8B7EE2E645A128F@OSLEXCHANGE.osl.state.or.us.local> [Institute of Education Sciences - Newsflash] New Data Reports Look at Trends in Bullying, Use of Hate-related Words, and Other Unfavorable Conditions at Schools. [crime-safety logo]Three new Data Points released today (July 28, 2016) look at trends in reports of bullying, use of hate-related words, and other unfavorable conditions in the nation's schools. The reports from the National Center for Education Statistics, in the Institute of Education Sciences, use data collected in the School Crime Supplement to the National Crime Victimization Survey. Trends in Bullying at School Among Students Ages 12 to 18 shows that the percentage of students who reported being bullied at school declined from 2005 to 2013. Trends in Hate-Related Words at School Among Students Ages 12 to 18 shows that, from 2001 to 2013, there was a decline in the percentages of students who reported being called a hate-related word or seeing hate-related graffiti at school. Among students who reported being called a hate-related word at school, the percentage of students called a gender-based hate word decreased from 2001 to 2013, while the percentages of those students called hate words based on race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation increased. Reports of Bullying and Other Unfavorable Conditions at School shows that students who reported being bullied at school also reported other unfavorable school conditions at a higher rate than students who were not bullied. Such unfavorable conditions at school included availability of drugs and alcohol and the presence of hate-related graffiti, gangs, and guns. ...connecting research, policy and practice You have received this message because you subscribed to a newsflash service through IES or one of its centers.
