State Library Coloring Book Now Available

[Swallowtail]The State Library building houses many pieces of public art, acquired through the Oregon Percent for Art Program<http://www.oregonartscommission.org/services/percent-art>. The polished granite panels on the reference desk and bronze medallions lining the second floor hallway are the creations of Oregon artist Dennis Cunningham<http://www.denniscunningham.net/>. The medallions depict the symbols of Oregon and historical icons Sarah Winnemucca, Chief Joseph, Tabitha Brown, and John McLoughlin. Years ago, the information embedded in the medallions was incorporated into a crossword puzzle, the “State Library Treasure Hunt”, a handout for students. This past April, they became the basis of a coloring book, created by Web Services Librarian Claire Bolyard, for the library’s Take Your Child to Work day activities. With the consent of the artist, it has been added to the State Library Digital Collections. We hope that you’ll enjoy the Oregon State Library Bronze Medallion Coloring Book<http://library.state.or.us/repository/2016/201606231458414/>.

2017 Ready to Read Grant Applications Now Available

The 2017 Ready to Read grant applications have been mailed to library directors at all eligible public libraries and are available on the Ready to Read webpage<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/Pages/R2RApply.aspx>. One hundred and thirty three Oregon libraries are eligible to apply for a total of $707,963 in state funds, which is an average of 94₵ per youth 0-14 years old. Applications must be date-stamped by August 31, 2016, or earlier.

Ready to Read Grants are the only state funds public libraries in Oregon receive. State funds are distributed annually to legally established public libraries through this non-competitive grant program. The amount of money each library may apply for is pre-determined by State Library staff using a formula based on the population in and square miles of each library’s service area or a minimum grant of $1,000. Libraries may spend these funds on early literacy activities for children birth through age 6 and/or Oregon statewide summer reading activities for children birth through age 14.
