Colleagues – some of you may recall the SLA discussion earlier this year
about moving its 2018 conference from Charlotte, NC, in light of the
passage of HB2:

Earlier today, I saw a message from SLA President Tom Rink confirming that
“SLA has put steps in motion to move our 2018 conference to a location
outside North Carolina.” The rationale for this decision was that:

“After extensive review and reflection, the SLA Board of Directors and
senior staff have concluded that HB2 specifically countermands our
anti-harassment policy as noted above. Even more broadly, our members are
professionals dedicated to transparency and access, and the very tenets of
this legislation strike deeply at the core of service inherent in serving
as information professionals and special librarians.”

I applaud our SLA colleagues for the stand they are willing to take for
their principles, and I wonder, again, at ALA’s enduring (and perplexing,
to me; infuriating to others) commitment to Orlando for its 2016 annual
conference.
