VanDike Patton (1914-1980) was a visionary ahead of her time in
understanding the impact that libraries can have on society at large.
Receiving her Bachelor’s and Master’s in Library Science from Florida State
University in 1957 and 1967, respectively, she researched the library’s
transformative power through collection development in her 1967
dissertation titled “Some Aspects of the Public Library’s Role as an Agent
