2016 Annual Report on Challenges to Library Materials is Now Available!
[Stand Up Badge]The 2016 Annual Report<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/projects/OIFC/2016.oifc.annual.report.pdf> on challenges to materials in Oregon libraries in available on the Oregon Intellectual Freedom Clearinghouse webpage. Last year nine items were challenged at three public libraries and one school library in Oregon. Eight of the items were retained, while the results of the ninth challenge are unknown. The Oregon Intellectual Freedom Clearinghouse (OIFC) collects reports about formal, written challenges to library material from all types of Oregon libraries. The information is reported to OIFC by Oregon libraries on a voluntarily basis. OIFC compiles the reports from libraries into an annual report each year; all previous reports are also available online at Oregon Intellectual Freedom Clearinghouse.
Please visit the OIFC webpage<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/Pages/projects/OIFC/index.aspx> to learn about how to prepare your library for potential challenges, how to talk with patrons who express concerns about material, what happens after a reconsideration report form is submitted, and how to deal with the media if a challenge goes public. Direct any questions to Katie Anderson<mailto:katie.anderson at state.or.us>, 503-378-2528.

DOGAMI Releases Digital Mining Records
[DOGAMI Logo]Oregon has a rich history in mining. Due to funding provided through the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) administered by the State Library, the Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI) is working to make mining records more widely accessible. Three new digital collections have been recently released. The Baker County Mining Claim Records<http://www.oregongeology.org/sub/milo/index-claim-records-BAKE.htm> collection, spanning from 1862 to 1964, includes over 50 volumes containing records of claims bought and sold, claim locations, claim maintenance, mining district meeting minutes and laws, and more. The Historical Society Records<http://www.oregongeology.org/sub/milo/index-historical-soc-records.htm> collection includes mining and mineral records held by the Josephine County Historical Society, the Gold Hill Historical Society, and the Woodville Historical Society. Records take the form of maps, letters, photographs, news articles, mining newspapers, and other publications.
The Mining Permit Viewer<http://www.oregongeology.org/mlrr/permitviewer.htm> is an interactive map that offers easy access to permit files such as site permits, inspections, maps, photographs, and correspondence for aggregate mining sites-many of which are no longer in operation. This collection includes records for Baker, Benton, Clackamas, Clatsop, Columbia, Coos, Crook, Curry, and Deschutes counties as well as some records for mines in Douglas, Lincoln, Marion, Polk, and Washington counties. These new collections make valuable Oregon mining information widely accessible to historians, genealogists, gold panners, and mine operators alike-without the need to travel or put fragile physical items in jeopardy.
