CALL FOR PROPOSALS (Extended)

Northwest Institutional Repository User Group (NWIRUG) Annual Meeting

Portland State University (Portland, OR) on July 21, 2017


Share your knowledge and expertise with colleagues throughout the
Northwest. The Northwest Institutional Repository User Group
<http://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/nwirug/> (NWIRUG) invites proposal
submissions for presentations, lightning talks or table talks during the
NWIRUG 2nd annual meeting on Friday, July 21, 2017. IR managers and staff
at all levels are encouraged to submit proposals.


Formats

Presentations

Presenters will speak for 20 minutes and will be grouped (by the NWIRUG
Planning Committee) with similar or related presentations to create a
“panel session.” Time will be reserved at the end of each session for
audience questions and discussion. Possible topics for speakers include:


   -

   IR Management
   -

   Outreach and Marketing
   -

   Policy Creation
   -

   Staffing
   -

   Copyright/Creative Commons/Author Rights
   -

   Balancing Success in the IR with Other Initiatives
   -

   Publishing (e.g. journal publishing, conference hosting, library
   services related to publishing,)
   -

   Different Approaches to Publishing (e.g., undergraduate vs. faculty
   journals, interdisciplinary vs. specialized journals)
   -

   IRs and the University Press
   -

   Open Educational Resources (OERs)


Lightning Talks

Lightning talks will consist of 5 slides, and speakers will have 5 minutes
(1 minute per slide) to discuss a topic of their choice. Possible topics
include:

   -

   Workflow Solutions
   -

   Best Practices
   -

   Tips & Tricks for Recruiting Content
   -

   Displaying IR Statistics Through Infographics
   -

   Designing a Social Media Promotion Campaign
   -

   Ideas for Celebrating Open Access Week


Table Talks

Table talks will be led by a topic “expert,” who will design and guide a
discussion or active learning session that provides practical application
for attendees. The session will last 90 minutes, and attendees may move to
various tables depending on their interests. Table talk ideas include (but
are not limited to):

   -

   Metadata: teach others about the creation and use of a data dictionary
   -

   More Metadata: cleaning up metadata to make it compliant with OCA/DPLA
   standards
   -

   MOUs: provide examples and help attendees write an MOU of their own
   -

   IR Policy Documents: explain the value of a collection development
   policy and help IR managers develop a policy unique to their institution
   -

   Copyright Questions: using common scenarios, serve as a resource for
   those having specific copyright questions related to IRs
   -

   Recruiting Content: help participants identify possible content for the
   IR (e.g., by searching their institutional website, using university press
   releases)
   -

   Open Textbook and OER Adoption: discussion about efforts to build
   engagement on their campus for open textbooks and OER adoption. Develop the
   foundations for an OER program



Proposal Submissions

1. Please prepare the following before you begin the online proposal
process:

   -

   Complete Speaker Contact Information
   -

   Presentation Type (Presentation, Lightning Talk or Table Talk)
   -

   Presentation Title
   -

   Presentation Description. The description should be approximately 300
   words (100 words for Lightning Talks); outline the main points you intend
   to cover, and highlight the relevance of the talk for attendees. For Table
   Talks, be sure to explain how you’ll actively engage attendees, and
   describe any “takeaways” for participants.


2. Submit your proposal via the online submission form

Proposal Deadline

The deadline for submissions is 5:00 p.m. PDT, Monday, May 8, 2017.


Selection Criteria

Proposals will be reviewed by the NWIRUG Program Committee for clarity,
originality, and timeliness. Presenters will be notified whether their
proposal has been accepted by May 15, 2017


Use of Presentation Materials

Following the conference, materials (such as slideshows) from the
Presentations, Lightning Talks and Table Talks will be made openly
available on the NWIRUG conference website. By participating in any of
these events, you agree to provide the NWIRUG planning committee with a
digital copy of your presentation that can be posted to the website.
