[Libs-Or] Pew Research: First-time internet users: Who they are and what they do when they get online

I thought that this was worth passing on, it's a quick read.

The Center provided internet-connected tablet computers to 112 people who are members of our American Trends Panel.<http://www.pewresearch.org/methodology/u-s-survey-research/american-trends-panel/> These panelists, who previously received our surveys through the mail, had never used the internet under any circumstances. This change allowed these respondents to become internet users if they wished by using the tablets for online activities other than taking surveys. [...] As a group, compared with more-veteran internet users, the first-time users in the sample skewed older, more female and had lower household incomes and educational attainment.


*         For starters, having access to the internet did not lead to more online exploration for some of the people we studied.

*         Some had difficulties with their tablets.

*         Some ventured out into online activities; some liked going online to learn new things and access entertainment.

*         These new users had a particular demographic profile.
