Tech-Talk:WEB TOOL- How Creative Titles Help Win the Game of Thrones
Intermediate

[writing slump]

I'm in a writing slump. My brain just isn't giving me creative ideas. I need a statement that will capture people's attention for a podcast, but my ideas are blah, blah, blah.

I started with the title "What Actions Can Managers Take to Gain Engagement?" -- but needed to really punch it up. It was just bland.

Does that ever happen to you? When you need a creative and eye-catching title for a program title, an article or maybe a social media post? But all that your brain spits out is B-O-R-I-N-G.

[Idea Generator]

So I went to the Internet for some inspiration and found a cool website from the digital marketing company called Portent.

They created a free tool called the "Content Idea Generator." You can use it to come up with title ideas for articles, presentations, and more.

It's a fabulous brainstorming tool. It's so crazy that it opens your mind to new possibilities.

Here's How it Works

When you enter key words into this tool, it creates possible titles for you. It may give you the perfect, creative one you need, but more often it triggers your mind to play off the ideas it generates. Sometimes titles may be silly and nonsensical, but they can really get your mind flowing with writing prompts to give you more direction.

(Notice that we used several creative titles above for this article, because of this tool. We're showing you how off-beat [and useful] it can be. Catching people's attention, after all, is the purpose of a title, right?)

Here's Another Idea

You may need help in figuring out what you want to write about. Type in a few words about your topic and you could have the beginning of a great article!

Titles That Will Make Your Hair Stand on End

Did that sub-head get your attention? We used the Title Generator tool to create something that would make you want to read more! Let's take a look.

·     Go to www.portent.com/tools/title-maker<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=00167w43yF6qMwEq7bP6_1Z6bIvsZMHRSTqIl58wAfHZyUipbp4mP-1SwerUIGJTu0Ra6Y7RYxvMf_ZzU-u7QvwXukmcwaxQWUYNnMW__soWUZmqL_Gq3upl_2pkxolU1NGUQv6IKSFLklBxtd6r3La8WZBxaFKKfYwz0nO63fEZKQ=&c=yds5cIJRAw7afUkPTY_T2gmWPXN6yOmeqrj5x2F4A4YQRiKJvLa8Xg==&ch=q2optH84FQwyx9dGWiQJR-NUWDUWSeDXOPpx1S-PL176GPBtr8Z_Ig==>
· Enter your subject in the search box (a few key words in the singular format) and push the arrow icon.
· A title will be generated.
· Keep hitting the refresh button for new and different ideas.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you like one, write it down (or take a screen capture) as they will disappear when you refresh each time.

You may not get the exact title you want, but it will trigger ideas so that you can take parts of one and merge it with another ... and come up with a creative one of your own.

Example:

Let's go back to the original lackluster title we were discussing, "What Actions Can Managers Take to Gain Engagement?" I typed the key words "actions of managers" into the search field and hit the refresh button a few times.

[idea example]

One of the results:

11 Ways Actions of Managers are Cooler than Michael Jordan

When I saw the "11 ways…" title it triggered a good idea for my updated title to begin with, "3 Conversations …" -- so my new title was 3 Conversations Managers and Employees Should Have Every Month.

Let's try another one. Of course we write about technology training. Let's see if we can make that more interesting.

Some fun results!

Give it a try for yourself, but be careful... as it can be addicting!

Communications: Talking and Email
Always add "so that..."

How would you like to get more buy-in to your suggestions and requests?

One way to energize any idea is to add a "so that" statement. It gives support for what you're saying because it explains the benefit.

· Let's don't talk about that now.
· Let's don't talk about that now so that we can do a little research.

· We provide training for staff and admin in technology.
· We provide training for staff and admin in technology so that they feel confident, empowered and self-sufficient.

· Everyone needs to be on-board with this project.
· Everyone needs to be on-board with this project so that the students will want to come again.

Give yourself a challenge. See how often you can add "so that" to things you say to test out this technique for yourself. You may be pleasantly surprised how useful this can be once you get in the habit.

P.S. Don't forget to include email notes and other types of writing. Giving the reason behind your thoughts always increases the impact of your message.
