Library Board News


State Library Board to Meet in Salem on January 19th and 20th

The Oregon State Library Board will meet at the State Library in Salem on Thursday, January 19th for its annual retreat, and Friday, January 20th for its regular board meeting. On the 19th, the board will review the current strategic plan and update it for 2017-2019. The agenda on the 20th will include the post-transaction review of the agency head financial transactions and review of the LSTA 2012-2017 Five Year Plan Evaluation. The open forum is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on Friday, January 20th. Anyone may address the board on any topic at the open forum.

Oregon’s Legislative Session is Right Around the Corner

[LegislatureLogo]Oregon’s 2017 Legislative Session will formally begin on Wednesday, February 1st. This is our regular annual session which may not exceed 160 calendar days in duration without a vote to extend. Session calendars containing many important intrasession dates are available via the websites of the Secretary of the Senate<https://www.oregonlegislature.gov/secretary-of-senate/Documents/2017SessionCalendar_Final.pdf> and the Chief Clerk of the House<https://www.oregonlegislature.gov/secretary-of-senate/Documents/2017SessionCalendar_Final.pdf>. This legislative calendar memo<https://www.oregonlegislature.gov/chief-clerk/Documents/2017_Legislative_Calendar_Memo.pdf> provides succinct descriptions of the important session dates.

Once Oregon bills are introduced during January’s Organizational Days, the Oregon Legislative Information System<https://olis.leg.state.or.us/liz/2015I1>, or OLIS<https://olis.leg.state.or.us/liz/2015I1>, will be extremely helpful in monitoring bills of particular interest. You can also receive updates on specific bills by using the eSubscribe service or via RSS. Live video feeds of committee public hearings, work sessions, floor debates, and votes are available. Particularly useful is the easy access to physical testimony presented by interested parties at public hearings. OLIS is your one stop resource for legislative information.

One last tip: Use the Oregonian’s Your Government<http://gov.oregonlive.com/> resource to obtain a “floor” voting record for individual legislators from both current and past legislative sessions.



2017 Ready to Read Grants Have Been Distributed

The 2017 Ready to Read grants have been distributed to public libraries this month. Public libraries received a total of $707,963 in state funds, an average of 94₵ per child 0-14 years old. The grant applications indicate that 54 libraries plan to spend some state funds on early literacy training, 95 libraries plan to spend some state funds on outreach to local underserved families, and 110 libraries plan to spend some state funds on the summer reading program. These three activities have been identified as public library youth services best practices. 2017 LSTA Grant Application Available in Early January

The 2017 LSTA grant application will be available in early January. The State Library is using a one-step application process, and applications will be due on April 5, 2017 by 1:00 p.m. Those who would like input may submit their preliminary proposals by 1:00 p.m. on February 15th for review and comment by the LSTA Advisory Council and the Library Support and Development Division staff. The State Library will announce the opening of this year’s LSTA grant cycle on the Libs-Or listserv.
