POSITION:                Instruction/Reference Librarian
DEPARTMENT: Library
REPORTS TO:      University Librarian
SCHEDULE:                         Tuesday - Saturday, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (Days and hours may vary.)
CLASSIFICATION:             Bargaining Unit Faculty, Tenure Track


SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
The Instruction/Reference Librarian (I/R) works collaboratively in a team-based environment to develop outreach services to meet the information needs of all University of Western States students and faculty and promote awareness of library resources. The Instruction/Reference Librarian, working with the University Librarian, library staff and appropriate campus entities, provides leadership in planning, implementing, promoting, and assessing University of Western States' integrated information literacy instructional programs. The I/R Librarian provides formal instruction in curricular programs as currently assigned.

The I/R Librarian identifies partnerships with campus programs and provides outreach to all UWS faculty. The I/R Librarian seeks ways to integrate library resources and instruction into academic programs by preparing customized and appropriate information literacy sessions and instructional materials for scheduled classes and electronic course environments for all of the identified communities of learners.

Major responsibilities for the Instruction/Reference Librarian include providing reference service by assisting and instructing patrons in locating and evaluating a variety of print and electronic information resources; preparing customized instruction sessions for scheduled classes both in classrooms and online; preparing printed and online information literacy instruction (handouts, tutorials, bibliographies, LibGuides); providing support to faculty scholarship and campus research with literature reviews and other reference services; and doing outreach to liaison departments. Assessment of these tools/programs and their effectiveness will be programmatic, ongoing and in support of library standards for accreditation.



The I/R librarian will integrate into the wider academic information literacy community to take advantage of regional and national development and training opportunities. The person in this position works closely with the University Librarian and the Metadata & Systems Librarian to meet the goals and objectives established in the university mission statement, core themes and strategic plan.



RESPONSIBILITIES:

Instruction and Reference:

*         Identifies unique concerns of specific learning communities and establishes agendas of engagement, curricula and support for each.

*         Provides, in collaboration with classroom and distance faculty, customized information literacy skills instruction in the classrooms and online.

*         Teaches the one-credit required course Information Mastery within the D.C. program.

*         Creates and maintains a library of instructional tools to include handouts, web tutorials, screen capture videos, and research guides.

*         Creates and maintains a meaningful programmatic assessment of library instruction, whenever/wherever it occurs.

*

  *   Helps promulgate library services to campus constituents and develops trainings on library-provided resources for students and faculty.
  *   Develops and maintains LibGuides and other online self-directed learning materials.

*         Provides library orientation to incoming faculty and staff.

*         Engages and participates with wider academic community to stay abreast of trends and leverage regional resources.

*         Collaborates with campus entities such as Academic Support and Training to identify integrated opportunities for online information literacy instruction and to increase/improve the library's presence within the online course environment.

*         Works with University Librarian to educate campus on copyright issues and manage compliance.

*         Works with University Librarian and Metadata & Systems Librarian to monitor and assess library services.

*         Provides one-on-one tutoring or assistance to students and faculty, as needed.

*         Assists faculty with research projects.

*         Available to assist distance learners via phone or online.

*         Acts as the point person for library initiatives promoting evidence informed practice (EIP).

*         Participates in faculty/clinician EIP training workshops.

*         Shares expertise and conveys enthusiasm for campus databases, citation management and other library resources and tools.

  *   Keeps current with instructional technologies.
  *   Collaborates with library staff to develop, gather, and report assessment and other data pertinent to accreditation activities.

Other:
*         Participates in professional associations.
*         Participates in campus committees and service as assigned.
*         May engage in library-related scholarship activities and/or collaborate with UWS faculty on authorship of scholarly works.

  *   Special projects as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:  (Knowledge, skills and abilities needed to perform the job.)

*         Working knowledge of information literacy pedagogy.

*         Working knowledge and understanding of learning styles and learning theories.

*         Ability to develop library instruction for face-to-face or online learning environments with a commitment to 'best practices'.

*         Knowledge of evidence informed practice principles and concepts.

*         Computer skills: Windows, MS Office applications, and internet applications; familiarity with screen capture/screencasting technologies

*         Strong commitment to responsive and innovative service and a desire to master new technologies.

*         Ability to perform duties with accuracy and attention to detail.

*         Excellent analytical skills.

*         Excellent interpersonal skills.

*         Ability to provide oral and written instruction in a clear and concise manner and produce written documentation.

*         Demonstrated ability to work with staff and patrons with varying levels of technological and information literacy expertise.
*         Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, faculty and employees of the organization.

*         Ability to organize and prioritize tasks.

*         Ability to work under pressure in a public area.

*         Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.

*         Able to work independently with efficient task management skills.

*         Ability to physically perform required duties, including but not limited to bending, lifting up to 25lbs, standing, and manual dexterity.

*         Familiarity with complementary and integrative modalities desired.


REQUIREMENTS:  (Education, Training & Experience)


*         MLS from an ALA accredited graduate program.
*         Two years professional librarian experience, preferably in an academic health sciences setting.

*         Demonstrated competence in academic reference and instruction, both face-to-face and online.

*         Demonstrated expertise in searching medical literature, including the use of PubMed, EBSCOhost databases (e.g. MEDLINE, CINAHL, DynaMed) and other health science information resources.
