Adrienne invited Newberg staff to participate in the training she had at her library this morning and I would concur with her comments and recommend Michelle. My staff came back talking about what they'd learned and how they would utilize it their work life as well as for personal safety. She was an informative and entertaining presenter and having someone be able to keep you interested is key to a good training session. Thanks Adrienne for inviting us.

Subject: [Libs-Or] Trainer recommendation for Library staff safety
Hi All,
I wanted to pass along a strong recommendation for a trainer. Michelle Moore is the owner and instructor for Empowered, LLC, based out of Hillsboro. She has a training customized for library staff to learn techniques for diffusing difficult interactions, raising self-awareness about safety, and how to deal with dangerous situations working with the public. We just had the training in Sherwood this morning and it was very well-received by staff. I believe this is coming to Hillsboro and Oregon City Libraries soon and that she’s been in Multnomah County recently.
I have attended a library-specific PrepareTraining before, and while that was 4-hours and this was 2-hours, the content was very similar. Michelle is a dynamic presenter, extremely knowledgeable and has numerous library exclusion stories to draw upon. She incorporated some interactive components and plenty of time to workshop scenarios.
The training description is:
This interactive course has two parts: General personal safety, which applies in and out of the workplace. It's all about awareness, assertiveness, and deterring bad situations. The second part is Library specific, dealing with your incident reports, or those from other libraries.
We go over how to recognize and diffuse a problematic instances (inappropriate behavior of all types) in the library before it becomes a reportable problem with exclusion notices, lowered moral, and reporting all around. We cover diffusing and awareness techniques related to this, then do practical application exercises to cement the work.
