Celebrate Thanksgiving with Oregon Documents
Thanksgiving is coming up, and our thoughts are turning to menus, cooking, and recipes. The Oregon Government Publications digital Collection<https://digital.osl.state.or.us/islandora/object/osl:docs> provides new and not-so-new information about holiday traditions and foods.
Governors' Thanksgiving proclamations<https://digital.osl.state.or.us/islandora/object/osl%3A62628> reflected reasons for Oregonians to be thankful, even during World War II. During the Oregon statehood centennial in 1959, the Oregon State College News Bureau published a series of features stories<https://digital.osl.state.or.us/islandora/object/osl%3A23504> for Oregon media outlets to use. Check page 11 for praise for Oregon-grown turkeys, and page 43 for an unusual Thanksgiving dish - carp.
Wild turkeys have been in the news lately, both in Oregon and nationally. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife publishes ideas for living with wild turkeys<https://digital.osl.state.or.us/islandora/object/osl%3A19124>, or hunting them<https://digital.osl.state.or.us/islandora/object/osl%3A18108> for Thanksgiving dinner.
If your holiday plans include imbibing, check out the Temperance Harvest<https://digital.osl.state.or.us/islandora/object/osl%3A78265> recipe, and other holiday cocktail recipes, from the Oregon Liquor Control Commission.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Talking Books wraps up 2017 Summer Reading Program
The Talking Books & Braille Library<http://www.oregon.gov/OSL/TalkingBooks/pages/index.aspx> at the State Library of Oregon recently wrapped up their 3rd annual Summer Reading Program<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/TalkingBooks/Pages/Students.aspx>. 47 student patrons of Talking Books registered to take part in the program and were challenged to read 10 hours over the course of the summer. By reading 10 hours the students would be entered in a drawing for a prize.
Twenty students read at least 10 hours over the summer and were entered in the drawing. Altogether 2,383 hours and 11 minutes were read over the summer. That total was over 750 hours more than the previous year. The amount of participants, those who completed the reading goal and the amount of hours read were all records for the Summer Reading Program.
The program is designed to help foster good reading habits in our students and help them combat the "summer slide", which may affect those students who do not read over the summer. Also it is designed specifically with the blind and visually impaired in mind. We wanted to provide our students with a fun, incentive-filled program that would help them start the next school year off right.

Other Library News
2017 Oregon Summer Reading Brief now available!
Oregon public libraries are critical community partners in addressing the summer learning slide where underserved youth lose reading skills while school is out for the summer. As many as 64,545 children and teens read enough during the summer to finish their local public library's summer reading program. Public libraries also made extra efforts to get underserved youth to participate in summer reading by translating materials into Spanish, presenting activities in Spanish, taking summer reading to free summer lunch sites, and reaching out to schools, daycares, and afterschool programs. Children and teens who participate in public library summer reading programs are more likely to maintain or improve their reading skills during summer vacation. Read the 2017 Oregon Summer Reading Brief<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/youthsvcs/srp.certificates/2017SummerReadingBrief.pdf> to learn more.
