Even the custom edition thing isn't a real money saver, because the only market for used custom edition books is at that school, or sometimes even with that teacher.  It is another way of limiting the used book market by the rascals.

Maybe the book is a custom edition.  We have quite a few in use at Chemeketa.  They usually save the students some money (not enough!).  The rental business seems odd, though, unless what they're renting is online access to a custom edition.

Person Publishing has significantly changed how students can get the new 9th edition Curious Researcher at Clark College.

What we know so far:

Students can only rent the new 9th edition Curious Research from the Clark College bookstore, they cannot purchase it.
Rentals must be completed with a credit card; cash is not allowed.

These restrictions seem to purposefully limit students options toward owning and reselling the book. It also places a barrier to access for students that don't have a credit card.

We would normally purchase a couple copies of the newest edition from the bookstore for our Course Reserve and reference collection. The current limitations prohibit us for purchasing from the bookstore, but we are not sure if these limits apply from other vendors.

Has anyone else had this happen at their college or university? If yes, how are you handling it?

After eight wonderful years at the State Library of Oregon, I am moving on to something different. I will be working at the Oregon Department of Transportation, and my last day at the State Library is October 5th.

It has truly been a pleasure to be part of the library world, and I will forever be a library lover, user, and supporter!
