Library Assistant II
Fern Ridge Library District, Veneta, OR
Salary: Range $13.30 - $17.35/Hr. and includes benefits

The Fern Ridge Library seeks an enthusiastic, high-energy team member to
work our circulation desk and coordinate the library's volunteer program.
EOE.
I. Definition:
Primary responsibility to coordinate library volunteer program, order
supplies, and to prepare media material accurately and promptly for library
use. Acts as 2nd main person who charges and discharges library materials
(approximately 30% of hours). Performs a variety of other duties in support
of library services including reference and patron assistance. Serves as
back up for essential youth programming (story time and toddler time).
II. Supervision received and exercised:
Receives supervision from the Library Director or monitoring from the
Assistant Director.
Supervises volunteers.
III. Essential duties
A. Volunteer services duties:
Recruits and trains volunteers for library work.
Plans, coordinates, supervises, and evaluates the work of library
volunteers.
Plans and hosts quarterly meetings, regular recognition activities, and
shelf reading activities.
Supervises major shifts of materials.
B. Supply management duties:
Tracks and inventories office supplies and library processing supplies and
makes purchase recommendations to Director.
C. Material processing duties:
Responsible for processing all adult media material, including but not
limited to DVDs, audiobooks, board games and video games.
D. Public service duties
Charges and discharges library materials according to current operating
procedures, assesses for damage, makes appropriate adjustments to item or
patron status, receives payments for service charges and lost or damaged
items, sorts materials for shelving.
Assists in all major aspects of Library Clerk responsibilities when
applicable.
Assists patrons in use of library equipment, including computers.
Answers reference questions and refers more complex questions to other
staff.
Performs the essential duties of Library Clerk in the absence of same during
assigned circulation desk periods.
Registers library patrons for library cards, explains library policy and
procedures.
Processes requests for library materials to appropriate staff, teaches
online catalog use, searches local collection and other bibliographic
databases, places holds as appropriate.
Answers the telephone, routes calls, takes messages.
Schedules library rooms (Konnie & Conference), including taking sign-up for
workshops and programs and receiving payment for any fees.
Performs opening and closing routines.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Library Director.
E. Career development duties
Attends workshops and continuing education programs as appropriate.
IV. Essential qualifications:
A. Knowledge of:
Basic supervisory skills
Supply management and ordering
Automated library systems and basic library procedures.
Intermediate working knowledge of computer programs such as Microsoft Office
Suite (Word, Excel, Publisher), the Internet, and email, Microsoft Front
Page
Material processing and repair.
B. Ability to:
Operate computers and standard office equipment with speed and accuracy.
Learn assigned tasks readily and adhere to prescribed routines.
Follow oral and written instructions.
Make mathematical computations and tabulations accurately and with
reasonable speed.
Maintain effective working relationships with staff members and volunteers.
Maintain effective relationships with library patrons.
Monitor and train assigned volunteers.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions in English with speed
and accuracy.
Physically perform required duties.
C. Experience and training
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the
required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. Typical ways of obtaining
the knowledge and abilities would be:
High school diploma or G. E. D. equivalent.
1 year of general office, crafts or library experience.
6 months of computer experience.
Prior customer service and/or supervisory work.
Prior library and/or computer database experience.
Spanish language communication.
V. Performance Reviews
Performance and contribution to the job and other characteristics will be
formally reviewed at the end of the probation period and annually
thereafter.
VI. Physical requirements
Work is performed in clean, well-lighted space. Involves sitting and
standing for long periods.

2. Employee may use hands for repetitive:
a. Single grasping
b. Pushing and pulling
c. Fine manipulation
3. Employee may need to:
a. Bend frequently
b. Squat frequently

4. Lifting: Medium work - Lift and move 40 pounds occasionally.
