MOBILE - Finding "Missing" Apps & Organizing Them
Intermediate

[find apps]

You've heard the expression, "there's an app for that!" And there is! Apps help us pay our bills, track our flights, and provide an endless amount of entertainment options. However, when you have so many on your smartphone, they can sometimes be hard to locate when you need them.

Even if you're conservative with the number of apps you've downloaded, it is frustrating when you need an app and you can't find it. They can hide in folders, be accidentally deleted, or if you don't use them very often, you can forget what color it is or what the icon looks like.

Most people have apps that relate to family and work, special interests and travel -- plus there's the apps that came installed on your phone initially. And sometimes an app may appear when you don't even realize it, like when there's a software update.

[too many apps]

This creates a cluttered environment. Organizing your apps into folders can be helpful -- but sometimes you may need a way to find them quickly.

So let's take a look at the method of organizing your apps into folders … and a few ways to find apps quickly on both iPhone and Android devices.

Group Your Apps by Use in Folders

Just as you organize files in a hierarchy on your computer, you can group your apps in the same way on your phone in folders. Themed folders could include groupings like:

· Social -- Facebook, Snapchat, YouTube
· Travel -- Maps, Airlines, Weather
· Work -- Email, Calendar
· Family -- Photos, Grocery Shopping
· Entertainment -- Music, Videos, News
· Food -- Restaurants
· Finance -- Banking, Bill-pay
· Kids -- All those apps that you have downloaded for kiddos
· Misc -- A place to tuck away apps that come with your phone, but you rarely use

Organize Your Apps on an iPhone

To organize apps on your iPhone, from your home screen, tap and hold down an app for about a second or two until it starts jiggling (this is called a "long press"). Then you can:

[move it]

· Delete it. Click the "X" in the upper left to remove it. TIP: If the app does not have an "X" in the top corner, that means it is a system app and cannot be deleted.

· Move it. Drag it to another location on that screen. Or to move the icon to a new page, continue dragging it to the side of the screen until the next page appears. Drop the icon on the new page where you want it.

· Move to a Folder. Drag an app (while jiggling) and drop it on top of an existing folder ... or another app ... which automatically creates a folder with both apps in it.

[create a new folder]

· Add a New Folder. To make a new folder, you may think that you create a folder, and then move apps into it. However, all you need to do is drag one app on top of another app that you want in that same folder. A new folder will appear with a "suggested name." based on the type of app the phone detects. To change it, tap on the folder name to engage it and type in a new name.

TIP: The functions above also work with the iPad and iPod touch as well.

Find an App on Your iPhone Quickly

Even if you have your apps organized, there are times when you just can't find one. Here are 2 ways to search.

[swipe down]

1. Engage the Search Option

This method is the fastest way to locate an app if it is already downloaded to your iPhone and you know the name of it.

· From the Home screen, swipe down from the middle of your screen to open the Search function.

[search]

· Key in the name of the app. Be sure to type in the full name before you select any of the suggestions that appear below.

· Tap the app when it shows, of if you don't see it, tap Search.

· The app should be the top result if it is installed.

· If the app is in a folder, the name of the folder will appear to the right.

· Tap the icon to open.

[app store]

2. Search in the App Store

· Tap the App store (blue) icon.

· Choose Search from the menu.

· Type the name of the app you are trying to locate and hit Search.

· When the app appears, to the right it will either say "Open" -- indicating that it IS installed on your phone. Or, there will be a download link. This means that you need to re-install it as the app was somehow deleted from your phone.

[search for the app]

[search in the app store]

If you have an older phone and don't see these options, look for something similar.

Organize Your Apps on an Android Device

NOTE: There are many types of smartphones that use the Android operating system, and a whole slew of different versions, so the steps noted below may vary significantly depending on your device.

We show you one way you can do things. Use these ideas as a trigger to see how they may work on your phone.

To organize your apps on an Android device, you can...

· Delete. If you downloaded the app from Google Play, you can remove it. Open the Play Store, go to Settings and tap My Apps & Games. Locate the app you want to delete and tap it. If you can delete the app, you will see an Uninstall button. Another way is to go to your phone Settings, Application Manager. You can't delete system apps that came pre-installed on your Android device.

· Move. On your home screen, tap and hold down the app for about a second or two. It may start jiggling. Drag it to another location on that screen. Or, to move the icon to a new page, continue dragging it to the left or right side of the screen until the next page appears. Drop the icon on the new page where you want it.

[folder]

· Move To a Folder. Drag an app (while jiggling) and drop it on top of an existing folder. Or, to create a new folder, just drag one app on top of another app that you want in that same folder. A new one will be created. To name the folder, long press the folder and it will open and display all the apps inside and launch the Android keyboard. Type a name for your folder and hit the Done key. Another way is to hold an app down, and choose Create a Folder at the top of the screen.

A Few Ways to Find an App on an Android Phone

Depending on the type of phone you have, if you can't locate an app that you need, try one of these methods.

[app drawer]

App Drawer -- Even though there are app shortcuts on your home screen, to access them all, go to the App drawer. Click on the icon in the bottom of your screen that looks like a circle with dots (or is sometimes a square) - as pictured to the left.

To view all apps, swipe through the pages (left, right, up, down).

In Settings -- Go to the Settings app (usually found on the home screen or in the app drawer). Scroll down and tap Apps (or Applications or App Manager). Click All to see a list of apps and engage the one you're missing.

[app store]

Google Play Store -- Click the Play Store app and in the menu on the left (three horizontal bars), tap on "My apps and games" from the list. Find the "Installed" tab and locate the app you're missing.

Communication: Talking
"That's a nice name."

Sometimes you have to ask someone for their name.

There's nothing wrong with that, it's important and essential at times. When you do, you have an opportunity to make that person feel especially good about themselves ... and be more agreeable ... by using one simple technique.

When might you ask for someone's name ... and even the spelling so you really understand it?

· You've just been introduced, but have forgotten the name already.
· You've called a customer support line, and the person quickly said their name.
· You're a school librarian or substitute teacher and you don't know everyone.

You get the idea! There are lots of times when knowing a person's name could be helpful. You can use that situation to make them have a rush of pride.

A Simple Technique to Make People Glow

After asking for the name, and verifying it, say something like...

"What a beautiful name."
"What a handsome name."
"That's a wonderful name."

Telling someone something positive about their name, in an off-hand manner, makes them glow. You'll feel it right through the phone with their voice. It smiles. And if you're face to face, you'll see the glow.
