So long, farewell
OTL comes to a close

In 2013, a group of Colorado library directors were discussing the sense of urgency they felt in shifting perceptions of libraries. This was not something that could wait several years. We needed to take action now!

From that early conversation, Outside the Lines was born. A group of library marketers and directors came together to solve a problem: how could we reshape the library’s story in a way that would resonate with staff and communities alike? How could we create something scalable so that libraries large and small could participate? How could we emphasize creative thinking and community engagement as critical to reshaping our story?

Our original goal was to have 20 libraries across Colorado participate in Outside the Lines. When we launched the initiative in 2014, 178 libraries across the U.S. and Canada participated. Since then, we’ve seen libraries all over the world engage their communities in creative ways. We’ve seen everything from community history lessons hosted in a junkyard to community dinners using food grown in library gardens. We’ve seen libraries create listening stations throughout their communities where staff were there just to listen to people talk about anything they wanted, to whole communities united in the face of tragedy to heal through art.

We believe that we’ve accomplished our original goals:

People understand that libraries are changing into dynamic centers for engagement designed to help them be their best selves.

Libraries better understand how to market themselves, finding new and exciting ways to get the word out about the 21st century library.

Libraries work together to demonstrate the creativity and innovation happening in local libraries.

Because we have accomplished these goals – and because of a shift in focus for our organizers in 2018 – the Outside the Lines initiative is coming to a close. While the important work of shifting perceptions of libraries is never done, we believe that there have been great strides in the last several years in helping people think about libraries in a different way. And we hope that those who have participated and have been inspired by Outside the Lines use what they’ve learned beyond one week in September; these are ideas and inspiration that we can carry with us and use all year long.
