The City of Salem loves its Library! Become a part of this vibrant community resource by working as the City Librarian at the Salem Public Library. In Salem, community support for the Salem Public Library is demonstrated by the participation of three active support boards, a strong and committed volunteer base, and recent investments in the facility.
The Salem Public Library is a division of the Community Development Department and provides library services at the Main Library in downtown Salem on the Civic Center campus and at the West Salem Branch Library. Library staff serve Salem's 162,000 residents 53 hours a week at the Main Library and 31 hours a week at the West Salem Branch Library.
The City Librarian plans, organizes, directs, and coordinates all aspects of library services. The responsibilities of the position include working with the Library Advisory Board in recommending policies and programs to the City Manager and City Council; continuously monitoring community need for and interest in library services; ensuring the City is providing cultural and educational materials and programs for the broad spectrum of library patrons; developing and administering the division budget; and collaborating with the members of the Chemeketa Cooperative Regional Library Service (CCRLS) to provide library services to residents of the Chemeketa Community College service area.
The ideal candidate will work collaboratively and effectively with all library partners, patrons, and employees while demonstrating excellent interpersonal and communication skills, visionary leadership and project/change management principles and practices, and the ability to promote equitable and flexible business practices to achieve continuous service improvement and inclusiveness in all library operations. Future growth for this position may include the incorporation of other community centric City organizations.
We are looking for a positive and energetic individual with a Master's degree in Library and Information Science and five years of progressively responsible experience in library organization and management, including two to three years of leadership and supervisory experience that demonstrates considerable knowledge in the principles and practices of general administration and supervision and extensive knowledge of the methods, policies, practices, principles, and procedures of professional library work or a related field; or any combination of experience and training that demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills and abilities, and are able to perform the essential job functions as listed in the classification specification document.
In addition to having a driving record that meets the City of Salem's driving standards, you must also pass:
Pre-employment drug test,
