For readers who are new to this discussion and debate about a recent update
to the American Library Association's "Meeting Rooms: An interpretation of
the Library Bill of Rights," below are some links from ALA's intellectual
freedom e-newsletter <https://ala.informz.net/informzdataservice/onl> to
get you up to speed.
In short, the ALA document which provides guidance on intellectual freedom
and meeting room use was recently updated. One of the changes that has
since received much negative feedback was the specific inclusion of "hate
groups" as an example of a type of group that may not be excluded from
meeting room use based on their viewpoint or content of speech: *"If a
library allows charities, non-profits, and sports organizations to discuss
their activities in library meeting rooms, then the library cannot exclude
religious, social, civic, partisan political, or hate groups from
discussing their activities in the same facilities."*
