Oh no! I accidentally got permanent marker on my wood desk! Not good… how can I remove it without damaging the finish?
The first thoughts that go through my mind are "Who can I ask? Who would know this type of thing?"
Do you think the same way? Do you want to ask someone you know - because you trust their answer?
But what about the Internet? Today, there's an answer to everything online. You just have to know how to find answers and how to select the best one.
Here's what I did with the desk problem. I went to Google and entered "how to remove permanent marker from wood." Many suggestions were shown that used simple items found in any home. I chose the option to use hand sanitizer as I had it in my purse -- and it worked beautifully.

Actually, the main reason I went to the Internet this time was because I had just heard about an incident my friend had ... and how she solved it with an online search.
[wasp sting]
She was stung by a wasp! Ouch, that can be very painful!
Her first need was to get rid of the stinging. Yes, she could use her experience and knowledge, but she wanted more, so she Googled "What to do about wasp stings."
She found these results and was able to choose a solution quickly, trying several natural treatments.

The Secret: Just Start Typing Your Thoughts
There is no need to know the perfect words to find what you're looking for. And it almost doesn't matter in what order you enter in the search terms.
You don't even have to write a great sentence … just type in a few words and the browser does the rest – even filling in the phrase for you based on similar common searches.
For instance, after taking care of her foot, my colleague wanted to get rid of the wasps she saw hovering in the bushes. Her search contained these words: "how kill wasps in hedge". A great answer popped up.

Two Ideas for Choosing the Best
When you get multiple results for your question, how do you choose the best and most helpful one? Here are two ideas:
· DATE. Look at when it was written. Sometimes you want the most current solution.
· SOURCE. In some cases, it's more important to look at who is giving the information. Is it reputable? Can it be trusted?

More Clever Tips For Searching

Auto-Suggest. Be sure to look at the automatic fill-ins or suggestions as you start typing. They can be very helpful.
Look Down Past the Ads. Some of the most pertinent answers are lower in the results list. Move on down and see some of the lower choices.
Search YouTube. Especially when you want a "how to" answer, one place to search is YouTube. Start there, rather than a general internet search. That way you'll get a video that shows you what to do.

Communicating: Taking Control
How to handle a "talker" ... a Parking Lot
Suppose you're in a meeting (or a training session) and you have trouble getting a word in edgewise because someone is monopolizing the conversation.
Or maybe they are asking questions that seem off track, but won't let the topic go. It's hard to get work done that way, right? What can you do?
You don't want to just shut them down and cause hurt feelings. But you do want to take control of the session.
There is a great way to approach the situation productively ... a Parking Lot.
· Create a Parking Lot. You want to respect the ideas / questions the individual has, but when they are not on topic, or can't be resolved right then, write them down for all to see on a flip chart, a whiteboard ... to be addressed later. That way the individual's issues are validated, yet set aside. "That's an important idea, but it's off-topic for the moment. Let's put it on the Parking Lot so we won't lose track of it."
· Review Parking Lot Issues. At the end of the session, take a look at the items on the list. Identify next steps. Some of them may have been resolved. Others may need a commit for follow up.
If the person continues to monopolize the time, call for a break. Take the individual aside. Tell them you respect their interest and involvement. Ask them to help you ensure that others have a chance to contribute.
