State Library Board Thanks Marie Ballance

Marie Ballance, the current designee for the Department of Education position on the State Library Board stepped down from her position as of August 18th. Marie will be moving on as the Principal of Eagle Charter School and will no longer be serving on the Board. We congratulate Marie in her new position and express our thanks for all her support and contribution on the Board.

Outreach, Outreach, Outreach - We are Always Looking for Opportunities

<https://www.oregon.gov/osl/LTLO/LTLOSep2018/DiversityConference.png>One of the key tasks for any library is to be on the continual lookout for opportunities to get your message out and promote your services.

The State Library may be a bit different than most libraries, but we are always looking for ways to promote ourselves.  So, we often end up going where the state employees go.

One of these events is the annual State of Oregon Diversity Conference held every summer at the Salem Convention Center.  This two day conference attracts a couple of thousand state employees. In fact, the conference is a major training opportunity for state employees who travel to Salem from throughout the state.

"Beyond Tolerance, Leveraging Differences" is this year's theme and there are a wide variety of breakout sessions with topics that appeal to a range of interests and experience levels.
We look forward to this conference each and every year since it is an opportunity to meet a couple of hundred state employees and talk about how the library serves them. We also want to hear more about the work they perform for the state and try to match our services to address their professional needs.

It's a great way for the reference librarians to spend a fabulous two days and meet their current and future clients. Perhaps there are similar opportunities in your location?

Government Services Promotes Safari in September

<https://www.oregon.gov/osl/LTLO/LTLOSep2018/SafariSept.png>This September, the Government Information and Library Services division is holding a promotional event to highlight and share information about our Safari database. We're calling it Safari September. And the alliteration fun doesn't stop there; some of our activities focus on days of the week - Monkey Monday, Tiger Tuesday, etc.

Our goals for this outreach event are to promote Safari<https://libguides.osl.state.or.us/safaribooks>, transfer users from an older ebook database, increase the number of registered Safari users, and maintain a steady growth in Safari's usage statistics.

As part of this event, we're having a variety of in person and online activities:

*       outreach at capitol mall area cafeterias (known as "Come to the Watering Hole"),

*       communications via newsletter and emails.

We're creating a LibGuide section<https://libguides.osl.state.or.us/safaribooks/september> to collect all of the information about this event, and O'Reilly Media, Inc. has provided us with giveaways to award as prizes to those who participate in our activities.

Our Newly Designed Website is Coming Soon!

<https://www.oregon.gov/osl/LTLO/LTLOSep2018/Newwebsite.png>We're excited to announce that our new website will be going live soon! The new website will be much more task oriented, making it easier to do the most common things people come to our website to do, like register for our library, update their address, sign up for Talking Books, among other things. The layout of the website has changed to simplify navigation and focus on the content you most want to see. There are a number of small but impactful changes, all designed to make your experience of the State of Oregon Library website much better for you.

This project has been a year in the making, and if all goes according to plan, the website is scheduled to go live in mid-September. URL redirects will be in place, so if you have any old pages booked marked, you will be sent to the comparable new page. These redirects are only temporary though, so please update any bookmarks you have when the new website goes live.

We here at the State Library of Oregon are very excited for this change. We hope you are too! We think you'll find our new website a big improvement, with a much more modern look and feel and enhanced, user-friendly functionality.

Challenges to Intellectual Freedom in Oregon Libraries: The 2018 Annual Report

The 2018 Annual Report<https://libguides.osl.state.or.us/ld.php?content_id=43653214> on intellectual freedom challenges in Oregon libraries is now available on the Oregon Intellectual Freedom Clearinghouse (OIFC) website<https://libguides.osl.state.or.us/oifc>.

The OIFC collects reports about formal challenges to intellectual freedom from all types of Oregon libraries. The information is reported to OIFC by Oregon libraries on a voluntarily basis. This year however, there is an significant change in the types of challenges that are being collected by the OIFC.

In the past, the OIFC was focused on collecting challenges to library materials only. Now libraries are encouraged to also report challenges to library services, privacy, internet and computer access, and hate crimes. This past year there were 24 challenges at 13 libraries in Oregon, one of which was a library service challenge. Read the report to find out what happened!

Ready to Serve on the State Library of Oregon's LSTA Advisory Council?

The State Library of Oregon is looking for four new members in 2019 to serve a three-year term on our Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) Advisory Council<http://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/Pages/LSTA/council.aspx>. The Council reviews project proposals and reports (including our annual LSTA competitive grants), makes recommendations to the Board, and advises the Board about any issues concerning Oregon's LSTA program. The LSTA Advisory Council consists of thirteen members and is broadly representative of library entities in Oregon, including public, school, academic, and special libraries, as well as library users. Special consideration is given to ensure that the following are represented: geographic areas of the state, library users, the underserved and underrepresented persons.

Nominations will be accepted using this form<https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2019LSTACouncilNominations> through the end of September 2018. Annual LSTA Competitive Grants Cycle Timeline Updated

To provide applicants with earlier funding notifications, 2019 LSTA Competitive Grant applications will be due by February 1, 2019. The application form and instructions will be available on the State Library of Oregon's website by November 1, 2018. Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit a draft application by December 14, 2018, for review by the LSTA Advisory Council and the Library Support and Development Division staff. Applicants will be notified of the State Library Board's funding decisions by May 1, 2019, and successfully funded projects can begin on July 1, 2019 and are to be completed by June 30, 2020. The State Library will also announce the opening of the 2019 LSTA Competitive Grant cycle on the Libs-Or listserv. Statewide Database Licensing Advisory Committee Annual Report Released

The Statewide Database Licensing Advisory Committee (SDLAC) has released its annual report<https://www.oregon.gov/osl/LD/technology/sdlp/SDLAC%202018%20Annual%20Report_final.pdf>. The report highlights usage statistics of the resources in the Statewide Database Licensing Program<https://libguides.osl.state.or.us/SDLP_FAQ> from the previous year and well as committee activities.

Highlights from the previous year include the evaluation of database proposals resulting in a new contract with Gale/Cengage, which started on Aug. 1, 2018. In addition to the 22 databases currently offered, two additional databases, Books & Authors and LitFinder <http://www.galepages.com/oregon_sl> were added to the program. There was also a substantial update to the currency of the ebook reference titles<https://drive.google.com/open?id=1qMbd1HCx1aLMZlV4mh2VWOcTC5BbRgGvgKmH9CTeY90> available from Gale Virtual Reference Library
(GVRL).
