Designing for Human Behavior: a Free LLAMA Webinar

Creating contemporary library spaces that work with natural instincts and human behavior can sound intimidating. What are natural human behaviors? What do people seek out in spaces, and what makes them appealing to our senses? And how can we design our library spaces with these things in mind? The Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA) will present “Designing for Human Behavior,” on Wednesday, September 18, at 1:30-3:00 p.m. CT.

This free webinar will provide a basic understanding of the natural human behaviors and instincts that drive our everyday lives, such as the desire to be in a secure environment and the need to have vision of your surroundings. You will learn how you can design your library space to promote comfort and security within the details – everything from the pitch of the seat and the ability to maintain your personal bubble, to the sightlines promoting comfort for our human instincts that trigger our internal fight or flight. Furniture that works well in library spaces has proven time and time again to put our instinctual fears at ease and allow us to spend those hours tucked away in the comfy chair reading a novel or at a computer completing a task. Now, it’s time to understand why this happens and how to better design our libraries with these things in mind.

Participants will be able to:
-Create an understanding of Human behavior in the context
of public spaces and Libraries
-Display the unique and varying ways humans
interact with furniture and space in Libraries.
-Describe the work and
usage patterns that typically emerge in Libraries.
-Show what furniture
and design concepts best address how people behave in Libraries.

This webinar addresses several of LLAMA's Foundational Leadership Competencies including: evidence-based decision making, forward thinking, marketing, communication skills, and problem solving.

Who Should Attend: library staff from all types of libraries

Our Presenter: Joe S. Agati is a formally trained industrial designer. By observing what he calls “key user insights,” he has been able to develop products that positively impact people’s lives. In 2012, he joined Agati Furniture as Director of Design. Agati Furniture has a history as innovators in the public space furniture industry. Joe S. has lead Agati’s product development with new innovative products which directly result from observing people’s behavior in public spaces and identifying ways to improve their experience. He is a longtime active member of LLAMA's Buildings and Equipment Community of Practice.
