State Library Launches Census Resource Center Program

The State Library of Oregon is partnering with U.S. Census Bureau Partnership Specialists to offer libraries an opportunity to serve as Census Resource Centers. This program will provide libraries with Census promotional materials for a general audience when the 2020 Census survey is open. (Mid-March through July 2020).
Each library that participates in this program will receive :

  *   A toolkit with promotional resources (copies of Census forms, marketing/educational brochures and materials, social media messaging, posters and signs)
  *   Access to dedicated U.S. Census staff to help with staff and/or volunteer training, planning promotional activities, and answering questions about navigating Census forms
Each participating library is asked to display promotional resources about the Census during March-July 2020. Libraries are also encouraged to:

  *   Create dedicated spaces, including public computer workstations, where individuals may complete their Census survey
  *   Provide staff or volunteers to assist individuals that have questions about filling out their Census survey
  *   Organize a "Census Night at the Library" or other activities that promote Census participation in their community

State Library Welcomes New Operations Support Specialist

Cory Horton joined the State Library on November 12 as the Operations Support Specialist. In this role, she provides administrative support for the State Librarian and State Library Board, coordinates State Library conference room reservations and billing, and processes invoices and payment requests. Cory is a Salem native and joins the State Library with 16 years of executive administrative office experience. After spending several years in the Columbia River Gorge at Insitu, Inc., a Boeing Company, Cory is excited to be back in Salem to apply her skills at the State Library. Outside of work, Cory enjoys cooking, listening to music, and spending time with her husband, Perry, and two boys, Sri and Sanjay.

State Library of Oregon Announces Grant Project of the Year

Waldport Public Library director Sue Bennett and her staff were honored at the Waldport City Council meeting, Thursday, November 14, 2019, for their grant-funded project Community Math Outreach.

Following a recommendation by the State Library of Oregon's Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) Advisory Council, the State Library Board recently voted unanimously to award Community Math Outreach the LSTA Project of the Year for fiscal year 2018.

Through a 2018 Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) Competitive Grant, funded by the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and administered by the State Library of Oregon, Waldport Public Library successfully refreshed many aspects of their youth programming over the past year to engage local students ages pre-K-12 and their families in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) related activities, with a special emphasis on math.

Through a creative new series of events such as Legos and math games, science-focused story times, math competitions, rocket workshops, as well as kids clubs for chess, radio controlled cars and drones, Waldport Public Library is helping redefine the library's role in a small community. It has also helped invigorate stronger relationships with teachers and administrators at the Lincoln County School District. According to Waldport Library's Family Outreach Coordinator, Sharon McCrumb, "As a library, we keep striving toward literacy for all ages, not just traditional reading. Math proficiency is also literacy. To become confident in math skills is a wonderful thing in a friendly, non-graded environment at the public library."

State Library Celebrates Oregon Index Online

On November 19, the State Library welcomed visitors and guests to celebrate the launch of Oregon Index Online<https://oregon.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=91dd1172fce9a235a5e993c03&id=881ed8dd59&e=eb6e6250d7>, a powerful heritage tool with information about events and people important to Oregon's history. State Library staff welcomed researchers, state employees, Oregon library staff, and members of the public. Some of the special guests included retired reference librarian Alice L. and Oregon Department of Revenue employee Joseph N., who were instrumental in scanning the cards, also attended. There was a cake decorated to look like one of the cards from the Oregon Index. Oregon Index Online<https://oregon.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=91dd1172fce9a235a5e993c03&id=5e1e62480d&e=eb6e6250d7> is available through State Library of Oregon Digital Collections for anyone to search or browse online.

This resource is especially valuable for finding local or state specific historical subjects or people. In some cases, the cards use archaic language that may have been considered appropriate in the context of the time when the citations were created, but may be jarring to library users today. The cards have been digitized and posted without altering the content.

The Oregon Index was compiled by State Library staff and volunteers starting in the early 20th century and continuing to the mid-1980s. It contains 785,667 cards with citations to articles published in Oregon newspapers, magazines, book chapters, and more. Topics cover events and issues important to Oregon history and state government.
