OLA's Library Development & Legislation Committee, Reference Round Table, and Legal Reference Round Table, along with WLA's Legislative Committee, are proud to offer a meaningful and timely preconference at this year's joint OLA/WLA Conference!
In "Promoting Democracy Through Civic & Political Reference Services: What Every Adult & Youth Librarian Should Know<https://www.wla.org/2019-ola-wla-preconference-workshops>," Oregon's own guru on the topic of civic engagement, Donna Cohen, will showcase tools and resources that help promote democracy for patrons from both states.
In these contemporary times, libraries are natural gathering places for community members who wish to become informed and educated on various aspects of government and politics. With this session, attendees will learn:
* how to find and track bills from both Oregon and Washington legislatures;
* the intricacies of campaign finance laws and how to identify who's giving money to particular politicians;
* the best methods for citizens to have their voice heard by those in positions of governmental power;
* and more!!
Registrants are asked, if able, to bring their own laptop/tablet, as this will be a hands-on workshop. In addition, a resource handout will be provided.
Early bird registration will end next Wednesday, March 6, so you're encouraged to sign up today! (If you've already registered for the conference, it's not too late to add a preconference; contact info at wla.org<mailto:info at wla.org> for assistance.) This preconference is scheduled for Wednesday, April 17th from 2:00-5:00pm.
We look forward to seeing you in April!
