WEB TOOL - Goal Setting Made Easy
Intermediate
It's that time of year when many people set goals (or resolutions).
I have a friend who has stopped setting them because she creates huge, sometimes unrealistic expectations -- like "I'm going to lose 50 pounds before summer," or "I'm going to bring in 10 new accounts every week."
Go big or go home, right? Well, maybe if you want to set yourself up for failure. There must be a better way!
[SMART goal]
Are Goals Really Important?
Statistics show people who write down their goals have over an 80% higher success rate of achieving them.
So how can we make goal-setting easy?
There are many tools out there, so we looked for one that makes it fun. The one we found doesn't just record your goals, you get the structure to help you take the steps to accomplish them.

Lifetick.com makes the process of setting goals simple and easy. It can be so much fun that you'll wonder why you didn't start sooner.
You can choose a specific version: Individuals, Business, School or Family. You can also use it on your own, or with your team or co-workers.
Let's take a look at how this tool can make goal setting -- and the ongoing process to achieve your goals -- a simple reality!
A Goal Setting Tool: Lifetick.com
[core values]
First, set up your no-cost account at www.lifetick.com<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001XmwttJ-ovA5_4DUnc1P08V8LBF3lO24jLWpVg8VtPTiASQHkehsKvcDfP1iKpP6_EhLNJdX3tAQB8S9aRZOfhn8Hf6Tw2VcA-R6GKM9Nya8ic5j2UKU4zknMPxd6Ec0LmmWkqQt5oOE=&c=Y8OHXD3vC30kCenRNig1ab9WMgAF37QgrrXXqTw4g3eGHnE2hj5T8A==&ch=CnH4H26tm2AlywzcHFvQITl0XkudFDHIxj6iSP352-Jdu9vKeNE7pQ==> by completing the sign-up process.
Core Values
The process doesn't start abruptly by just entering a goal, but begins by looking at your core values. You can imagine that identifying what is important in your life, and linking them to your individual goals later, makes the process more personable for you.
We suggest that you start with the suggested core values list and modify it so you have 4-8 core areas.
Set SMART Goals
Then, as you write your goals, think of the "SMART" mnemonic. This is a simple way to make sure your goals meet important guidelines that will help you succeed.
SMART often stands for:
· S - Specific
· M - Measurable
· A - Achievable
· R - Relevant
· T - Timely
Another popular meaning for SMART is:
· S - Significant
· M - Meaningful
· A - Action-Oriented
· R - Rewarding
· T - Trackable
Once you have decided on a goal and thought about the SMART aspects, type it into Lifetick:
· Name it
· Give it a due date
· Assign a Core value
· Select a Magnitude (Easy, Doable, Challenging, Daunting, Audacious)
· Set the Priority (Low, Medium or High)
· Articulate the goal and purpose.
Here's one goal we created. You can see how easy and straightforward it is.
[set goal]
Assign Tasks
We know that a goal that takes time to reach, also consists of many steps to get there. So next you will break down the Tasks that will be a part of getting to the finish line.
For example, if you have a personal goal to "get fit" or reach a certain weight, there are steps that you need to assign. The actions for this goal are designed to create a healthy lifestyle by creating new habits so that after the goal has been met, the healthy behavior will continue.
Assign daily, weekly or other on-going tasks that are of course specific, relevant, timely, etc..
[tasks]
[goal setting]
Tasks can be set up to be shared with others if it is a team effort (or for support and encouragement). And email reminders can be set to prompt when tasks need to be completed.
Now you're ready to take the steps to achieve your goal! They make the process simple so that you can focus your energy on completing your goals -- not learning a new tool.

Communication: Writing
Communicate with Yourself
Writing down your intentions creates a powerful communication channel to your mind and heart.
So the more specific you can be, the more likely you'll achieve positive results. That's where applying the "SMART" formula comes in handy.
Situation Example: You handle the social media marketing for your organization and you want to increase the number of followers that you have.
Your Initial Goal: Grow social media audience.
Well… that's a start, but this goal could be much better by following the SMART example. Let's ramp it up a bit.
· S - Specific - Grow the number of Facebook Page followers to publicize programs & events, increase event sign-ups and increase brand awareness.
· M - Measurable - Increase the number of Facebook Followers to 10,000.
· A - Achievable - Growth is based on a 25% increase, which is attainable.
· R - Relevant - The number of Followers will increase exposure to programs and events resulting in higher attendance.
· T - Timely - The goal will be reached by the end of the 2nd quarter.
A Better Goal: Grow Facebook Followers to 10,000 (a 25% increase) by the end of 2nd quarter to increase program event sign-ups and brand awareness.
Now your goal has some teeth to it and will be much easier to break down into manageable tasks to achieve. It will also give you specific data to communicate for performance reviews.
