2020 Oregon Heritage Conference - Call for proposals!

The Oregon Heritage Conference will take place in Corvallis on April 22- 24, 2020.

Oregon Heritage invites ideas and proposals that explore this year's theme: Harness the Power of Heritage! Individuals and groups that preserve and interpret Oregon's past wield power and responsibility as they make decisions about how history is shared publicly. At the same time, it is essential heritage groups feel empowered as vital organizations within their communities. In 2020, we will come together to think deeply about heritage and power.

Conference proposals related to this theme might include:

  *   Public engagement
  *   Including more voices
  *   Advocacy
  *   Creative programming
  *   Promoting the value of heritage
  *   Partnerships

Oregon Heritage invites creative proposals! Panels and lectures are welcome, as well as facilitated conversations, debates, or other creative suggestions.

Conference sessions must be structured in two ways:

  *   75 Minute Session
  *   Half-Day Pre-conference Workshop (3-4 hrs)

If you would like to submit a proposal, please provide: 1) the moderator's name, title, organization, and contact information; 2) a session title and type (workshop, lecture, or panel); 3) a description of the session proposal and how to relates to the theme in 75 words or less; and 4) information on any additional presenters.

The Oregon Heritage Conference brings together people who love and work with Oregon's heritage. Designed to be interdisciplinary, the conference focuses on all sectors of cultural heritage, such as historic preservation, museums, archives, libraries, historic cemeteries, and local and state government.

The deadline for proposal submissions is September 1, 2019. Please send your proposal to Beth.Dehn at oregon.gov<mailto:Beth.Dehn at oregon.gov>.  Applicants will be notified of decisions by September 30.

Still time to help us with our website!

Oregon Heritage, which includes the State Historic Preservation Office, the Oregon Heritage Commission, the Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries, and the Oregon Main Street Network, is in the process of redoing the website<https://www.oregon.gov/OPRD/hcd/pages/index.aspx>. Our new website will be task-oriented and visitor-centric. It will also become mobile friendly (YAY!). But before that happens, we need your help!

In order to be task-oriented, we need to know how your brain works. By participating in this exercise, you will help us figure out how you make sense of all the programs and services we offer. We will use the results to help us organize the new website, so your opinion matters! We serve a multitude of different audiences and we would really like all of those voices to be heard when we begin to make changes to the website.

Bill passed mandating holocaust and genocide education in Oregon

On May 28, 2019, SB 664, a bill to mandate Holocaust and genocide education in Oregon starting in the 2020-2021 school-year, unanimously passed its final vote on the House floor. Once it is signed into law by Governor Kate Brown (UPDATE: Governor Brown signed this bill on June 4) this important legislation will provide all students in the state of Oregon with curriculum on the Holocaust and genocide. At OJMCHE we believe that by learning about the consequences of discrimination and hatred we can inspire the students of today to become the leaders of tomorrow and promote a culture of inclusiveness to prevent future genocides. OJMCHE has been proud to work with Les and Eva Aigner, Holocaust survivors and members of OJMCHE's Speaker's Bureau, the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland, Senator Rob Wagner and Representative Janeen Sollman who spearheaded the effort and the many other supporters who made this possible.

To ensure that we are working with educators, OJMCHE is excited to announce the formation of a Teacher Advisory Board<https://t.e2ma.net/click/i1p6vb/m46wfg/mkfiyj> for the 2019-2020 school year. Additionally, we are offering a new opportunity for students to become involved with Holocaust and genocide education with our new Student-Educator Internship<https://t.e2ma.net/click/i1p6vb/m46wfg/2cgiyj>. Women's history story from Astoria highlighted on the latest Oregon Heritage Exchange Blog post

DeMuro award nominations now open

Now in its 7th year, the DeMuro Award<https://restoreoregon.org/demuro-awards/> honors the best in preservation and reuse of Oregon's historic places.  It celebrates historic rehabilitation and compatible infill projects that demonstrate exceptional quality, creativity, problem-solving, and community impact.

Past recipients range from a Forest Service cabin in Sisters to a department store in Portland, a historic theater in Corvallis to a former auto dealership in Medford.  They include transformations of a saloon into affordable housing, a roller rink into light manufacturing, and a baggage depot into a transportation hub.

 Awards are presented at Restore Oregon's Restoration Celebration on November 1st and published in the FieldNotes magazine and website.
