Healing from the Trauma of Racism: A Liberation Process Group for People of
Color

*Dates:* Mondays, January 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th

*Time:* 6 - 9 PM

Racism is a form of trauma for People of Color that is particularly
insidious, because it is so pervasive, yet largely denied. When People of
Color attempt to address racism directly, we are often met with outrage or
tears. Rage, heartbreak and terror may be some of the effects of this
ongoing toxic exposure. We may have difficulty sleeping. We may begin
isolating. We may overeat or not eat enough. We may get to the point of
breaking down.

Because of the nature of systemic oppression, we cannot live in this
country and escape the effects of racism. But we can end our isolation. We
can gather together, care for one another and heal.

Because of colonization, genocide and enslavement in the United States,
consensual and legal interracial relationships are a relatively new
phenomenon. As People of Color become more aware and empowered, old models
of assimilation in interracial relationships are no longer working for
them. White partners will need to relinquish their white privilege within
the relationship by taking an ongoing journey of healing from racist
socialization. BIPOC partners will need to continue their journey of
healing from the trauma of racism.

Here is a unique opportunity for interracial couples to engage in a
workshop with Danette C. Gillespie-Otto, LCSW and Marc F. Otto, MA, RSMT/E,
two practitioners versed in Interpersonal Neurobiology who are in an
interracial couple. Using psychoeducation, affinity groups, mixed groups,
couples sand tray process, non-dominant hand drawing, mindfulness and
attunement practices, we will support you in beginning to unwind the impact
of racism on your relationship.
